The concept of cheat day is simple: have one day a week where you set aside your diet and eat whatever you want. This is done to motivate you to eat right the other six days in the week, and it can help to fire up your metabolism. However, the sad truth is that most of us make terrible decisions on our cheat day, and we end up eating WAY too many calories. A cheat day can set back your weight loss a lot more than you’d think!
Overdoing it on Fruit
Your body NEEDS fruit, as fruit is the best source of Vitamin C, antioxidants, natural sugars, and special enzymes that promote better digestion and overall health. But make no mistake: fruit is NOT a weight loss-friendly food. Not only is it high in sugar, but it’s also high in calories thanks to that high sugar content. Eating more than 1 or 2 servings of fruit per day is not recommended. You do need some fruit, but make sure most of your raw food intake comes from veggies.
Cutting Back Too Much
The human body is designed to enjoy food, and it needs a certain number of calories per day in order to function. Cut back those calories too much, and your body suffers. People often make the mistake of severely restricting caloric intake, but that won’t have the desired weight loss effects. Instead, you’ll just put your body into starvation mode: it will burn muscle and cling to fat.
Eating Too Much “Healthy” Food
Just because a food is healthy, that doesn’t mean it’s okay to go all out! In fact, even unhealthy foods in moderation are better for you than excessive quantities of “healthy” food. Yes, avocadoes, olive oil, hummus, and coconut oil are great for your health, but if you eat them in excess, you’re going to gain weight. The goal is to fill your diet with as many healthy foods as possible, but in the right macronutrient balance and with the right number of calories. That’s the only way you’re going to lose weight!
Following Someone Else’s Diet
Just because a certain diet is working for a friend or colleague, that doesn’t mean it will work for you. Your body is unique, your mindset and motivations are unique, and your actions cannot be defined by anyone else. You have to find a diet that promotes healthy eating habits, regular exercise, smart food choices, and a healthy lifestyle. That’s more important than doing any specific diet or eating plan.
This is one of the worst eating mistakes you can make! Not only will you end up hungrier (and thus more likely to cheat on your diet or overeat at your next meal), but you will deprive your body of the calories it needs to burn for fuel. It’s actually better to eat more small meals than 1 or 2 large meals, as that way your body always has a steady supply of energy to tap into. NEVER, ever skip your meals!
