Benefits of Eating Fish

Fish is, by far, one of the healthiest foods on the planet! Not only is it great when served with fresh vegetables, a small side of potato gratin, or even a salad, but it's also one of the healthiest sources of protein around. There are SO MANY benefits to eating fish!  Before we list those, though, check out our sister articles regarding how many calories are in fish.

High in fat -- Fish is one of the fattiest proteins you can find, but the fats it contains aren't the bad, heart attack-causing kind. Instead, they're the kind your body needs for a faster-functioning brain, a healthier heart, flexible joints, and a more efficient immune system. Fish are the best source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are vital to your health! As you'll see on the table below, you can get quite a lot of healthy fat from each serving of fish!

Rich in protein -- Fish has an excellent amino acid profile. While it doesn't contain as much protein as meat or chicken, you get a good deal of the essential amino acids without as many calories or as much saturated fat. For those trying to build muscle, fish is one of the best foods to add to your diet! The table below will show you just how much protein you get in each serving of fish.

Loaded with Vitamin D -- Vitamin D is an interesting nutrient. It's needed for your body to store calcium for your bones, and it helps to increase fat burning. Fish is one of the best sources of this vitamin (which also comes from the sun). By eating more fish, you provide your body with the nutrients needed to burn fat and promote healthy bones.

Low in calories -- Unlike meat, chicken, cheese, and dairy proteins, fish is a fairly low-calorie protein option. Check out how many calories there are in each serving of fish:

Note: You'll notice that certain fish are higher in calories than others. This is because they contain more fatty acids. These are the Omega-3 fatty acids your body needs to function better. Higher-calorie fish are the better choices!

Heart-Smart -- It's been proven time and again: fish is AMAZING for the health of your heart. Fish contains a lot of Omega-3 fatty acids, which help to strengthen your heart muscle, reduce triglycerides in your bloodstream, and prevent high blood pressure. Eating more fish is one of the best ways to protect your heart from age and free radical damage.

Brain-Friendly -- Fish has been called a "brain food", and for a very good reason! The Omega-3 fatty acids in fish are needed for healthy brain function. Basically, these fatty acids are the fuel that your brain burns, so getting more of this fuel in your diet means a faster-running brain. The fatty acids can also boost brain elasticity, preventing neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's or Alzheimer's. Eating fish helps to increase the grey matter in your brain that is responsible for your emotions and your memories. Basically, the key to a healthier brain is adding more fish to your diet!

Emotion-Boosting -- Thanks to the Omega-3 fatty acids in fish, you can be happier as well as healthier! Eating fish can help to reduce your risk of depression, as the fatty acids help to regulate function in the part of your brain responsible for your moods and emotions. Fish can even make the antidepressant medications you're taking more effective. As a result of eating fish, you can have stable, balanced emotions.

Wow! These are just a few of the MANY reasons you should eat fish. Definitely a good idea to add them to your diet, right?
