That's not to say that working out isn't important, but it's not the MOST important thing to do if you want six pack abs.
The key to getting six pack abs is to cut the number of calories you eat in a day, while at the same time doing lots of exercise. Cutting your calories will force your body to burn more fat as energy, and doing exercise ensures that your metabolism won't slow down. With the combination of a healthy diet and lots of exercise, you're well on your way to rockin abs!
Eating Fat for Six Pack Abs
For those who are trying to lose weight and burn fat, fat is a very important part of your diet. Your body won't burn fat if it senses you aren't consuming any, so you need to make sure to eat at least a little bit of fat.
Fat should account for no more than 20% of your diet if you are trying to lose weight and burn fat. You want to focus on the healthy fats, such as the unsaturated fats you get from nuts, olive oil, and coconuts. You should also get a little bit of fat from meats and poultry, and the fat from yoghurt and milk are excellent for helping to suppress your appetite.
Helpful tip: Count 0.4 grams of fat for every pound you weigh--ergo, a 150-pound woman should consume 60 grams of fat per day.
Eating Carbs for Six Pack Abs
Without carbs, you'll have NO energy to do your exercise.
Don't listen to the diets that recommend cutting carbs, as that's just going to shoot yourself in the foot. You need to consume carbs in order to have energy for exercise, and carbs keep your body running.
What you DO need to do is focus on complex carbs instead of empty ones. Eat lots of high-fiber foods, and skip any starch that is white and highly refined. Carbs should account for about 50% of your total food intake if you want to be healthy, so make sure to cut out the bad carbs while focusing on the good carbs.
Eating Protein for Six Pack Abs
Protein is important for weight loss and muscle-building, and those looking to sculpt six pack abs need to increase their protein intake slightly. Go up to about 30% protein in your diet, with the focus being on lean proteins--legumes, soy products, and other plant-based proteins. Red meat, chicken, pork, and eggs all contain a bit more fat than you might like, and not the good kind!
You should try to eat about a gram of protein per pound of body weight, so a 200-pound person needs about 200 grams of protein. It's a rough estimate, but it's good enough to help you eat the right amount of protein in order to pack on the muscle!
