Ediets: The Medifast Diet
eDiets.com
refers to itself as the “home of the weight loss guarantee.” It
offers many different diet plans designed for customized weight loss. One
program is the Medifast diet. It has been used by more than one million
dieters for over 25 years. It is a portion controlled, calorie deficit
weight loss program that has shown more rapid weight loss than traditional
diets. On the program, you lose weight while maintaining lean muscle mass.
Clinical studies have shown a typical weight loss of 2-5 pounds per week.
Individual results may vary. The website offers educational articles on
nutrition, clinical studies involving Medifast, and meal plans based on
personal preferences. Medifast Plus is a specially designed line of food
products formulated to meet the needs of men, women, people with diabetes,
arthritis, heart disease. Medifast suggests consulting with a physician
prior to starting its program, especially if you are under 18 or over 70;
have diabetes, hypertension or any serious medical condition; or are taking
medications, especially for diabetes. It is recommended that you stop
smoking before beginning the program.
Medifast for Women 4-Week Package
Medifast for Men 4-Week Package
Currently, the average adult spends nearly $16/day on food. Medifast is
significantly less for most people. It costs about $10/day. Costs are
somewhat less if you use the convenient Variety Packages purchase option.
They cannot be customized or changed. You may choose to design your own menu
and only order the meals you prefer. Most Medifast products are certified
kosher by The Orthodox Union of New York.
The heart of the Medifast diet is the “5 & 1 Plan.” You eat 6 times a day: 5
Medifast meals and 1 “Lean & Green” meal. Every Medifast meal is a
nutritionally balanced combination of carbohydrates, protein and other
nutrients. They come in individual packets that you mix with water and
microwave or refrigerate. There are more than 60 Medifast meals, including
shakes, soups, stew, oatmeal, chili, hot beverages, iced teas, scrambled
eggs, bars and puddings. There are also vegetarian meals. Each serving
counts as one meal. The “Lean & Green Meal” includes 5-7 ounces of cooked
lean meat (fish, chicken or beef) plus salad and/or vegetables. Meals may be
seasoned, but salt intake should be limited. There is a meatless plan for
vegetarians. While following this diet, you eat one meal every 2-3 hours for
a total of 6 meals per day. You should also drink at least 64 ounces of
water per day. In addition, you can drink any non-caloric beverage,
including hot or iced tea, coffee or decaf, and diet sodas. No alcoholic
beverages are permitted. Vitamin supplements are generally unnecessary.
The diet also includes snacks! You can supplement the 5 & 1 Plan with
Medifast soy crisps, crackers and beef, chicken or tomato soups. Other
snacks include celery stalks, sugar-free gelatin or Popsicles®, dill pickle
spears and sugar-free gum or mints. You can have only one snack per day. It
is recommended that you do not replace a Medifast or “Lean & Green” meal
with a snack.
The Medifast diet works because it creates a deficit between the number of
calories you require on a daily basis and the number of calories you
consume. There are three phases of the diet plan. In the transitional phase,
.you go from what you eat normally to 800-1,000 calories a day. You continue
until you have reached your weight loss goal. It is recommended that this
phase extend no more than 16 weeks. During the maintenance phase, you learn
to eat what you need to maintain your weight over time. You can re-introduce
fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy products and whole grain products during
this period. The exercise phase includes walking, biking, swimming and
individualized exercise programs. As with any exercise program, begin slowly
and steadily exercise for longer periods.
“MyMedifast” is the dieter support system on the web. It provides valuable
tools, support, and assistance with questions on nutrition, exercise and
motivation. The support system also includes a meal-planning tool and an
on-line connection with others using Medifast:
