10 Healthy Foods to Lose Weight

Many people who want to lose weight find it difficult to know which foods to choose for the best weight loss results. Losing weight by swapping and changing to different diets is not the best way, we need to find a way of reducing energy content from the normal foods we eat every day.

Eat these foods to lose weight:

  1. Eggs
  2. Fish
  3. Fruits
  4. Vegetables
  5. Lean Meat
  6. Milk Products
  7. Nuts and Seeds
  8. Salad
  9. Water
  10. Wholemeal Products

We should learn to pick out the best foods from our normal daily diet and use them to form the basis for our new healthy eating habits. This gives familiarity to the new way of eating rather than the idea that the individual is "on a diet". Trying to lose weight on a specific diet relays the message that it will end some day. When a diet ends many people gain back most, if not all the weight lost.

How to eat foods to help lose weight:

Try not to have too much variety of food for each meal. That means, offering one main dish and one to two side dishes. It does not mean limiting ingredients in a dish. By nature, people consume more food and calories when there is more choice on offer. For example, have you ever been at a buffet style meal where its “eat all you can” no matter how much we eat there always seems to be room for one more item.

Many diets in the past have been based on a similar principle, the cabbage soup diet, the vegetable diet, etc. Health experts state always eat a balanced diet which may seem to contradict the above statement. However, it is possible to select a balanced diet and lower amount of choice for each meal by offering a couple selections at dinner.

Be careful what you add to healthy foods

Salads are one of the best foods for losing weight, they are very popular for many dieters trying to lose weight fast. The problem is people often add sauces or creams to add taste to an otherwise bland food. Mayonnaise is a common addition to salads but it is very high in calories and fat and a salad with too much Mayonnaise can be just as high in calories than some of the worst weight loss foods.

Baked potatoes are also a great food to help lose weight when part of a small, low calorie meal but again, some people spoil this great example by adding tons of butter. Filling a baked potato with baked beans or cottage cheese is probably the best way to add taste and more nutrition to this low calorie food.

The idea is when choosing the best foods to help lose weight try not to neutralize the food's possible weight loss benefits, be careful with what you add! Eat a little high quality protein food with each meal or snack. One study in the UK for the Atkins diet has shown that it wasn't the low carbs that were the reason the volunteers were losing weight, it also wasn't the ketosis which was causing the body to boost the metabolism.

In fact it was believed to be the protein content. The protein in each meal was helping to dull the appetite causing volunteers to actually consume less calories than those on the low fat diet.

If Dr Atkins discovered protein's ability to suppress appetite then why don't we simply include some protein at each meal without the hassle or expense of completely changing our whole dietary foods in order to lose weight.

Adding protein to each meal along with the idea of eating more meals in a day may be difficult to keep calories low enough to lose weight. Animals proteins are high in calories and saturated fat and therefore not a great choice for everyday protein. Instead, eat more legumes and fish as part of your protein intake along with vegetables.

Remember losing weight is about eating the best foods and in proper quantity.

Can you make a list of food's that we should eat and shouldn't eat.
It would be so much faster. Thank you

  2. Preeti says:

Hi Kelly. There isn't a perfect list of foods to eat and not to eat. However, processed foods are never good so matter how "low fat" or "low sodium" they are. This includes potato chips, frozen dinners, candy, many breakfast cereals. A good diet is full of nutritious calories (high fiber, low cal) like leafy green vegetables, lentils, beans, bell peppers, carrots, avocados, fruits (lots of fruits!), and leaner meats.

  4. well thanks for the information is true and I was dieting and the more variety of foods we tend to eat more, it's best to eat small amounts and sometimes a day with an interval between meals three hours that if the contralateral amount of calories consumed per day not to exceed the amount of calories the body needs, it is also important to exercise to get the body molding

actually you should limit the amount of fruits you eat when trying to lose weight because of the carb content. so only eat a few fruits a week. i used to think it was okay to have fruit everyday so i would be eating up to 3 servings a day but it's pretty bad.

Hello everyone! I would just like to point out that consuming an excess of calories from any food is going to cause weight gain. Carbohydrates themselves do not cause weight gain. Carbohydrates, including natural sugars, are a very important part of the diet and are the body’s main source of energy. Fruits in particular are low in calorie, high in fiber and loaded with health promoting vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and photochemical which reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, and stroke.

The healthiest way to lose weight is to cut back on processed and packed foods, consuming a well balanced diet that fits your caloric needs for weight loss, and plenty of physical activity. Increasing the variety of foods you have at any eating time will increase the amount of food you consume. Try the rule of 3 where you eat no more than 3 different foods at one time to reduce your chance of overeating.

I think that eating your meals from a small plate helps to gradually cut down your portion sizes. Additionally, only eating proteins with vegetables for dinner (carbs with breakfast and lunch only) also helps.

    • ReneeR says:

Great point John! Using smaller plates can be a huge help for decreasing caloric intake. It is also healthful to include vegetables and proteins at every meal. Vegetables supply an array of beneficial nutrients while protein helps to fill you up and keep you full. Fiber is also a big help with weight loss which can be found in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The important thing to remember is not one approach is right for everyone. Stick with what works for you. Consuming a balanced diet filled with a variety of food will ensure you are getting all your essential vitamins and minerals needed for health and weight loss. Good Luck!
