Healthy Snack Foods You Should be Eating

Snacking is something that MUST be done right if you want to succeed with your diet. There are lots of healthy snack foods around, but sadly most people gravitate toward the UNHEALTHY options. For those who are serious about getting in shape, here are the healthy snack foods you should be eating:

Apple/Milk Combo

Apples make a great snack, as they’re loaded with sugar and healthy fiber. However, pairing it with skim milk is one of the best ways to make it a filling snack. The milk gives you protein and calcium, as well as carbs to keep your energy levels up.

Canned Tuna with Whole Wheat Crackers

Tuna makes for a great snack, thanks to the fact that it’s loaded with protein and healthy fats. Serving it on whole wheat crackers gives you some complex carbs for energy, and makes for one heck of a tasty treat.

Avocado with Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese is a fairly low-fat dairy product, and one of the best to help you fill up without overdoing it on calories. Avocadoes are actually surprisingly high in calories for a veggie, but they’re rich in healthy fats and Vitamin E to help protect your heart.

Hummus and Carrots

Hummus is made from high-fiber chick peas, loaded with olive oil and lemon juice, and a great source of low-fat protein. Adding baby carrots into the mixture gives you something to crunch down on, and helps you to fill up on even more fiber. All in all, it’s one of the healthiest snacks around, though not the most balanced.

Pita Bread with Nutty Lentil Spread

Mix some ground lentils with sunflower seeds and pine nuts, and spread it over some whole wheat pita bread. Not only is this a highly delicious meal, but it’s one you can eat without a guilty conscience. It’s a fairly low calorie snack that is very high in nutritional value.

Berry Smoothie

If you want a powerful smoothie, blend Greek yoghurt with blueberries, chia seeds, and honey. You get a whole lot of healthy fiber, some wonderful antioxidants, and a lot of protein and healthy fats. Best of all, it’s VERY filling and will stop those hunger pangs in their tracks!

Edamame Beans

Soy beans are a Japanese food that should ALWAYS be considered healthy. Boiled or steamed, they are a fun snack you can eat anywhere and at any time. Sprinkle a bit of salt on them, and you’ll find that they are a fiber and protein-rich snack food that makes for a delicious midday snack.

If you’re a tofu fan, you’ll love what you can do with the silky stuff to make a quick snack. Use a miso or soy sauce to drizzle over the top, or serve it after grilling/frying it.  Add some sesame seeds on the top, and you have a very filling, fairly low-calorie snack!

Almonds, peanuts, cashews, and pecans are just a few of the many nuts you should be eating as your ideal healthy snack. Not only is it a quick and easy snack, but it’s one you’re very unlikely to tire of. Just stick with a handful or two at a time, and you’ll avoid overdoing it on your calories.

Chicken Breast

For a quick, protein-rich snack that will help to fill you up, stuff pita bread with chicken, tomato, lettuce, and some parsley, and drizzle a tiny bit of yoghurt on top. You’ll find that it makes for one heck of a tasty treat, and it will keep you going for hours. Best of all, it’s easy to make and is fairly low in calories.
