How to Do a One-Day Detox Right
Doing a One-Day Detox can be a great way to cleanse your body, flush toxins from your system, and do the “healthy” thing without going on a very strict diet. You’ll find that just one day of detoxing will help to restore your body to normal function and get your metabolism back on track, and can give you an extra dose of vital minerals and vitamins from the healthy, natural foods you’ll use to detox. Here’s what you can do to do it right:
Start with Warm Lemon Juice
Warm lemon juice gets your digestive tract working and helps to start your day off nicely hydrated. Plus, it’s a boost of Vitamin C that will increase your metabolism and provide the critical antioxidant your body needs to function better.
Do Light Exercise
On a detox day, you don’t need to hit the gym at full-intensity. Instead, for your One-Day Detox, give yourself a light workout—a Yoga session, light resistance training, or a short jog. All you want to do is get your heart pumping and your blood flowing, and start your body burning calories to produce energy. Keep it light!
Now it’s time to break your fast with a healthy detox smoothie, preferably something made with a lot of fruits, veggies, nuts, and seeds. Your goal should be to focus on the fiber your body needs, along with the crucial antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. You can always have more to drink later in the day, but make sure that this breakfast smoothie or detox juice is loaded with all those critical micronutrients.
Switch Out Coffee for Tea
For just one day, as hard as it may sound, it may be a good idea to give up caffeine. It may do you good to get away from effects of the caffeine itself, but also from the dairy products and sugars you put in the coffee. Instead, have a few cups of green or black tea, and load up on those critical antioxidants. You’ll probably have to drink a few more cups throughout the day, but you’ll find tea gives you the energy you need without the jitters—it’s a much more soothing and relaxing boost.
Throughout the day, focus on getting up and moving around more. Walk around the office, take a short stroll around the block, climb a few stairs, or spend your lunch break walking outside. Light exercise will help to encourage digestion on your One-Day Detox, keeping everything in your body moving properly and firing up your metabolism.
Lunch should be as green as breakfast—either a salad, soup, or smoothie made with a lot of healthy green ingredients. Spinach, kale, and chard are all amazing sources of vitamins and even a bit of protein, and they should be the base of your lunch. Add in plenty of colored veggies, and consider a small serving of whole grains like quinoa, barley, or millet.
Hit the Sauna
If you really want to detox, hit the sauna and get your body sweating! Sweating is your body’s way of flushing toxins through your pores, and you’ll find you feel a whole lot better after a few minutes in the steam room.
Make sure your evening is relaxed, with a calm activity that will help you to end the day in a peaceful mood. Have a light dinner of green juice, a snack of fresh fruit, and a relaxing evening to get you ready for a proper night of sleep!
