Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), also known as a spastic colon, is a functional bowel disorder that affects many people around the globe, causing chronic pain and discomfort and sometimes making it difficult to perform even the simplest tasks.

If you’re one of the many people suffering from IBS, then you’re probably already aware that there isn’t any cure for the disease. It can only be controlled.

Here are some great health tips to use to help you eat right when dealing with IBS, these are important to consider when setting up a meal plan when you are trying to lose weight.

The food list to avoid here, though rather lengthy, is fairly simple to understand. In order to keep your diet clean and correct when suffering from IBS, it’s best to avoid high levels of saturated fats. This would include fried foods, mayo, butter, and other foods high in sat-fats.

Also, take it easy on the caffeine. You should try to avoid too much soda, chocolate, tea, coffee, and other food/drink items higher in caffeine.

Dairy is also something to try and avoid. A lot of IBS sufferers out there have problems with diary in general – they’re lactose intolerant. What you can try to do is quit with all dairy products on a trial basis. If that helps, then try to stick with it. You can try to reincorporate some dairy, but try to avoid it completely for a while and see if that helps with the symptoms.

Meal Sizes

IBS-control diets share something in common with basic weight-loss diets – you want to control your portion size and spread out your meals. Give your colon less of a load, literally, by eating smaller meals throughout the day instead of larger meals. Four or five small meals would be ideal here, but do not skip meals altogether.


Fiber is a wonderful substance that works well with our bodies. Foods high in fiber, especially in IBS sufferers, will help to promote regularity and help to ease the symptoms. You can supplement fiber and/or switch your diet around to include more fiber-heavy foods. Don’t throw it all in at one time, though. Gradually introduce it.
