It can be hard to keep up with your workout or diet when all you want to do is sleep all day and eat all of your favorite cheat foods. Exercise and dieting is not easy, but it’s a vital part of being healthy. For those who are serious about keeping up with their efforts, here are some tips to help you out:
Pay for It
If you hire a personal trainer, he/she will charge you even if you don’t show up to the session. Signing up for a gym will take money out of your pocket every month, regardless of how many times you actually make it to the gym. The more it costs you personally, the more likely you will be to continue going!
Have a Backup Plan
We all have those days when we feel a bit lazy and just don’t have the time or energy to make it to the gym. But it’s on those specific days that you need to push yourself hard and power through the lethargy. If you can work out at home, you’ll still get in your exercise but without the effort of going to the gym. Make sure it’s the EXCEPTION rather than the rule!
Promise yourself that you will do something nice if you can get through an entire week of workouts. Perhaps you will have a day at the spa, a gathering with friends, or a special meal with your significant other. Whatever the reward, make sure that it is conditional on your getting in a solid workout every day.
Get Up Earlier
Getting up an hour or so early is one of the best ways to motivate yourself to work out. If you spend that first hour of the day at the gym, you’ll feel a whole lot better about yourself all day long. Plus, once you build the habit of getting up early, you’re less likely to skip your workout first thing in the day. It will feel amazing to get in that workout first.
Don’t let your workouts become dull or boring, but keep them fresh and lively. Change up your routine once every few months, and make sure to alternate between cardio and strength training. Keep your iPod stocked with good music or a slew of audiobooks, and you’ll actually look forward to your workout!
Track Your Workouts
Nothing will make you feel guilty for not getting to your workout like seeing a big red X on the days that you skipped. Tracking your workouts in a log or journal will help you realize just how much you have been bailing on your fitness, and may be the kick in the pants you need to get you back on track.
Work with Friends
Being accountable to someone else is a great way to ensure that you actually get your workouts in every day. You can meet up with a friend at a certain time every day to get in your workout together, and push each other to do more and work harder. That accountability is often enough to keep you going long enough to build those fitness habits.
Change it Up
When you feel yourself growing bored of your workouts, it’s time to change things up. Perhaps you can sign up for a few classes (spinning, cardio box, etc.) at the gym to get a new form of cardio, or you can have your personal trainer change your strength training routine. It may even be time to get out of the gym completely and try a new form of fitness (running, cycling, martial arts, etc.). Variety is the spice of life!
