How to Safely Exercise Even in a Pandemic
We all know that exercise can help to boost your immunity and make your body more resistant to disease. It’s also vital for stress-relief, helps you lose weight, cleanses your pores, and gives you a nice boost of adrenaline to keep you going through the day. Even if you’re trying to limit your social interaction, you can still fit in a kickass workout! Here’s how you can safely exercise even in a pandemic:
Find the Empty Gym Times
There are certain times in the day when your gym is likely packed—usually early in the morning and later in the afternoon. During the mid-morning and early afternoon, however, gyms tend to be fairly empty. Steer clear of the times when the gym is packed, and only go when you know it will be mostly empty. It’ll be much easier to avoid infections if there’s no one around to infect you! Important: make sure to wipe down the equipment thoroughly before and after use to reduce exposure to germs!
Work Out at Home
There are TONS of bodyweight exercises you can do at home, as well as exercises you can do with only a few simple weights. You don’t need a fancy home gym to be able to work out. You’ll find that just a little bit of equipment is enough to get you through any pandemic without compromising your fitness efforts or giving up on your New Year’s resolutions.
Try Home Workout Videos
If you’re not great at motivating yourself to work out, try following a home workout video or workout series. You can find thousands of videos on YouTube, on every conceivable topic and any fitness program you’re interested in. You can also pay for programs like BeachBody or P90X and do those workout videos online.
Go for a Walk
Being out in the open air is a good way to get plenty of sunshine, which is vital for fighting off infections and keeping your immune system in good shape. You won’t have to worry about infection as long as stay more than six feet away from those you pass. You’ll find the fresh air and daylight will do wonders to boost your mood, and you’ll get in a great walking workout no matter where you are.
The best way to avoid the virus is to stay far away from it, and cycling will take you as far away from infected people as you want. Hit your local trails or take a long bike ride out of the city. You can even enjoy the parks or forest trails in your area. The more you spend time outside and away from enclosed spaces, the healthier you will become and the lower your risk of getting infected.
Running indoors in an enclosed environment increases your risk of exposure to pathogens, so now’s the time to start your outdoor running once again. You’ll find there are so many beautiful trails and running paths in your city that you might never have known about had you not stepped away from the treadmill. Time to start working toward that 5K you’ve been telling yourself you want to run!
Enjoy Outdoor Sports
Being outdoors will reduce your risk of exposure to any pathogens, as viruses and bacteria have a hard time surviving under direct sunlight and heat. Get back into sports—boating on nearby lakes, hiking in the woods, snowboarding at the end of the winter months, or even playing team sports at your local parks. You’ll be able to stay fit and healthy while enjoying the great outdoors.
