How to Stay Motivated to Lose Weight

When you’re motivated, you can accomplish amazing things, no matter how tough things get. But when your motivation flags, it can be difficult to keep up with even the simplest diet, weight loss, and exercise habits. No matter how inspired you are at the onset of your efforts, there’s going to come a time when you start to lose motivation. When that comes, use these tips to help you stay motivated to lose weight:

Set a Simple, Reachable Goal

A lot of us fail to reach our goals because they’re too big and too hard to reach, or even something too nebulous and un-specific. If you want to succeed, take time to set a goal that is bite-sized and easily reachable. Make it a goal to lose just a few pounds, or to fit in a workout every day for a month. The more quantifiable and easier to reach your goal is, the more likely you are to actually reach it. And that first success is a huge part of keeping up your motivation throughout the entire process.

Go Easy On Yourself

Don’t push yourself so hard that you set yourself up for failure. It’s important that you do little things to keep yourself motivated, but don’t judge yourself too harshly when your motivation flags. Don’t worry about trying to stay motivated—instead, focus on just doing what you need to do even when you’ve run out of steam.

Make Small Changes

Don’t overhaul your life from one day to the next, but make small, easily attainable changes that will actually be possible. Take your diet and make small tweaks: cut out one food, add one food, or cut back your daily calorie intake by 100 calories. Smaller changes are always easier to make, and to keep long-term. You’ll find that those small, attainable changes can make a huge difference when it comes to seeing long-term results.

Stop Looking to Others for Inspiration

When you rely on others for inspiration, you’ll find that external source often lets you down. But when you know the reasons you need to do things and you build that motivation from within, it’s far easier to build it back up when it inevitably fails or crumbles. So shut off those Instagram pictures that are there to motivate you, and stop worrying about what your buddy’s doing or not doing. Be your own inspiration if you want real results!

Set a Reward

Giving yourself something to look forward to after achieving your goal is one of the best ways to keep your motivation up. You’ll be able to focus on that reward and keep pushing because it’s something you’re excited about. Make it a healthy goal, such as a weekend camping vacation or a spa trip. Anything that keeps you exercising and healthy, away from food-based rewards.

Push On

Days are going to get tough and your motivation is going to fail—it’s on those days that you have to keep fighting. When you don’t feel motivated, you still need to keep making that effort because it’s the only way you’ll get where you need to go.

Fill Your Life with Health

Make sure that everything in your life encourages better health. Purge your kitchen of junk food and anything you want to eliminate from your diet. When you go shopping, steer clear of the aisles loaded with unhealthy foods. Find friends who do more exercise and encourage you to join them. The healthier your life, the easier it will be to make the healthy choices every day.
