Indoor Winter Workouts

During the winter months when it is too cold to head outside to go for a jog or walk you sometimes have to stay inside to complete your workouts. Buying expensive equipment or signing up for a personal trainer isn’t typically an affordable or practical solution to accomplishing your indoor winter workouts but you can still maintain your weight and fitness levels by considering some other options. You can stay indoors while still getting your winter workouts in.

Join a Spin Class

If you like to enjoy long bike rides in the warmer months a local spin class might be a great option for you. You ride on a stationary bike for about an hour along with an instructor who keeps the class motivated with music and directions. There will be times you ride fast, ride slow, stand up and sit down. These classes can get pretty intense and are a great full body workout. Often you can join in on a local spin class without needing to purchase a full gym membership. Many places will let you pay per class if a membership isn’t what you’re looking for. You can also find spin classes available at many YMCA facilities. Check your local area.

Try Swimming

Local high schools and community centers often have open swimming pool hours for for people who want to do laps for exercise. Steady swimming using different strokes works out the entire body as well as improves breathing technique and overall mood. Many people find swimming to be a very relaxing workout but it’s also very intense, especially if you incorporate strokes like the butterfly and back stroke. Many swimming pools are located indoors and comfortably heated during the colder seasons making swimming a practical winter exercise.

Practice Yoga

Some people don’t consider yoga as being more than a mental workout but such is not the case. A gentle yoga class stretches all the muscles in the body improving flexibility, strength, balance and more through guide poses. It can be done as a simple vinyasa flow class or you can get into Bikram yoga which is where the room is heated to about 90 degrees. This helps you sweat out toxins and also warms you up in the cold winter months! There is a yoga class for everyone and you can find them at local gyms, yoga studios or community centers. If you are shy about doing yoga in a group, you can also purchase yoga DVDs for all levels via the internet or in local bookstore so you can practice yoga at home. Yoga is a great way to overcome the winter blues because it will lift your mood while helping you stay in shape.

Dance to the Beat

There’s so many options when it comes to dancing and you can lose weight and tone muscle by doing this activity. Dance workouts have become increasingly popular lately especially with the Zumba trend taking over. Many of these workouts encompass stretching, dancing and cooling down in a one hour workout. You can take classes at a local gym or studio and videos are available to do in the comfort of your own home as well.

Play Basketball

This high intensity sport is a great way to get in winter workouts. Whether you want to sign up for an adult league in your hometown or you just want to shoot some hoops with your friends at the gym, basketball requires constant movement. You’re running across the court back and forth, jumping, shooting and defending the ball. A quick game of basketball can sometimes be a much better cardio workout than you will get on a treadmill not to mention it’s far more fun and competitive.

Start Rowing

Purchasing a simple rowing machine at an affordable price is a great way to get in a full body winter workout. The simple back and forth motion of a rower works legs, arms, core, back and more. You’ll even get your cardio workout in with this workout.

Use Kettlebells

If used correctly, kettlebells can provide better strength training for indoor winter workouts than a typical set of barbells can. Kettlebells combine cardio with strength training in as little as 20 minutes. Certain kettlebell exercises can burn up to 20 calories each minute. You typically would have to run one mile in about 6 minutes to get this same calorie burning ratio. A whole slew of kettlebell exercises are available and you can do these winter workouts from the comfort of your own home while you watch television.

Indoor Winter Workouts

Depending on where you live you may be cooped up indoors for quite a few months during the winter season, waiting for it to warm up again. Don’t leave your fitness goals or New Year’s Resolutions behind this year. There’s no excuse for not being able to work out even when the snow is flying.
