Weight Changes With Age

As you get older, your body goes through a lot of changes. Your metabolism slows down, you become slower, and it becomes easier to gain weight. Between the ages of 35-55, for both men and women, it’s important to realize that without preparedness in a new diet and exercise regime you might gain weight unexpectedly.

You might become more sedentary as you age, which means you become inactive and exercise less. This can cause unwanted weight gain, especially since your metabolism slows down with age and your body won’t be able to burn calories as fast as it once did. If you continue with your current diet but your body is slower and you’re getting less exercise, there is a good chance you will gain extra weight.

Aging causes physiological changes to occur, which often lead to weight gain. For men, there is a gradual decline in testosterone, which can reduce muscle mass and cause the metabolism to decline. Women start to gain weight a few years before menopause, this is occurs when estrogen levels star to decline.  Both men and women should focus on eating small portions with nutritiously dense food and increasing activity levels, this will help to limit weight gain with age.

Alongside a healthy diet, you should focus on doing as much activity as possible.  Lift weights, go on walks, or join a gym. Exercise increases your metabolism, increases your bone density, helps strengthen muscle mass, and provides oxygen to your organs. With any change in diet or exercise, make sure to talk it over with doctor.

A great way to incorporate these changes into your life is to look for support from a friend, partner, or family member. Find others who are motivated to also eat a healthy diet or exercise daily (even if for different reasons) and you’ll be more inspired each day. It can be hard to make big lifestyle changes but with a bit of support, you’ll be able to succeed.

Getting older is inevitable but if you are prepared for the changes and are willing to adapt your diet and exercise routine to one that better fits your lifestyle, then you will be prepared and able to stay trim and healthy
