Low fat diet links

Losing weight requires a low fat diet and decent exercise. Looking at the food pyramid it becomes clear which foods will make us fat and which keep us trim.

If you want to lose weight the first thing you need to change is your diet. Unhealthy food is commonplace today, fast and easy take-out being a major culprit, so you need to find alternatives. There are so many diets out there, but the trick for sticking to a diet is having one which doesn’t starve you and still provides enjoyment. If you’re always hungry and you hate the food you’re eating on your diet, chances are you won’t follow it for long.

The basic idea with weight loss is always to eat less calories and this is true of a low fat diet, but you must also remember that the body can react to having less food by storing fat, because it thinks it is going through a lean period. Skipping breakfast is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when one tries a low fat diet. Yes you might be eating less, but by missing the most important meal of the day you are slowing down your metabolism and contributing to fat storage.

If we all had a healthy balanced diet it would be a low fat diet, meaning that none of us have to starve ourselves. There is no miracle “cure” for fatness; we can’t just take a pill or a certain fruit and expect to lose weight. By eating brown breads, low or non-processed foods and lots of fruit and water we are already on our way to constant and sustainable weight loss.

Fats, oils and sweets
At the top (the food we need the least amount of) are the fats, oils and sweets; the stuff we love the most. These foods contain the most amount of energy and historically were harder to find. Therefore the body reacts to the taste of these substances in the most favorable way. Because of technological advances we can now produce as much of these foods as well like and there-in lies the reason so many people today are obese.

Milk, meat and protein

Second on the pyramid are milk, meat and protein. Again these are popular foods today because they taste delicious. Like fats, oils and sweets they were historically harder to obtain than the items lower on the pyramid. We also don’t need much of these either, but again because of technology and agriculture we now have constant access to things like meat and milk.

Fruits and vegetables
These are the food your parents made you eat before you were allowed to go watch TV!; less tasty than those above, but more naturally abundant historically. Eating fruit and vegetables are a great way to lose weight because they contain less fat which is prefect for a low fat diet.

Breads, grains and other starches
Last on the pyramid and probably for most the less tasty are the starches. These foods are the best to eat if you want to lose weight, but remember processed white bread is nowhere near as good for you as brown.
