Protein bars are a great way to fuel your body with energy while doing an intense workout, but the problem is that they’re just so expensive. A single Clif Bar will cost about $15, and you’ll find that the average box of energy or protein bars will sell for at least $70 to $100. With these bars being so expensive, it can be hard to even consider buying them for your workouts.
Step 1: Choose your protein powder. Casein protein is not digested as quickly, but it releases energy over the long term. Whey protein is quicker to digest, but won’t give you energy for as long. Soy and milk proteins are also useful, and they digest in a normal amount of time. Once you have combined the various protein powders, add almond or coconut flour. You aren’t going to cook the bars, so you need to be able to eat the flour raw.
Step 2: Add milk. Regular cow’s milk is an excellent addition to your bars, as it will provide you with lots of calcium and protein. Soy milk or almond milk are good for those that are lactose intolerant, or that want to make vegetarian or vegan bars. The addition of nut butter will help to make the bars richer and more filling, and will help to pull everything together. Just add enough liquid to make it into a dough-like texture.
Step 3: Shape the bars. This can be a lot of fun, and it’s very easy to do. Simply shape the batter into the right size, and use a knife to cut out the bars and make them look nice. If you find that your batter is too sticky or moist, add a bit more protein powder and flour to help dry it out. If it’s too dry, add a bit more milk or nut butter until it’s malleable enough to form into bars.
Step 4: Add chocolate. Dark chocolate is an excellent source of antioxidants – which your body will need after a heavy workout. Use a double boiler to melt the chocolate, or place the chocolate bar in a glass bowl – placing the glass bowl on top of a pot of boiling water. Melt the chocolate until it is nice and liquid, and pour the chocolate over your already-formed bars. Remember, the darker the chocolate, the healthier it is!
Step 5: Place the bars in the freezer. These bars aren’t meant to be cooked, but freezing them will help them to maintain their shape. If you leave them out, they’ll get all soft and sticky. You want to place them in the fridge for at least a day before eating them, as that will ensure that they are hard. If you let them defrost for a half hour before eating them, they will be just the right consistency.
Just like that, you’ve made your own simple protein bars. Not only will they be a great source of energy, but they’ll be incredibly tasty at the same time! You’ll be able to enjoy the delicious taste of chocolate, nuts, and protein powders, and it will be a healthy snack that you can eat before, during, or after a heavy workout.
