Should You Eat Tuna Every Day?

Fish is one of the healthiest foods you can eat, no matter what your diet! You can eat tuna to stay healthy, lose weight, pack on the pounds of muscle, gain weight, burn fat, and the list goes on. Tuna–and all fish–is an amazing source of protein, high in healthy fats and minerals. But is there such a thing as “too much tuna”? Should you eat tuna every day, or will it be bad for your health? What makes tuna so awesome? A surprising number of things! First off, it’s incredibly rich in protein. For those trying to build muscle, lose weight, and burn fat, the high protein content of tuna makes it an awesome diet choice. It’s also a good source of healthy fats, and you’ll find that it will deliver a balance of minerals and nutrients. It’s fairly low in calories compared to other higher-fat proteins (like meat and chicken), so you can eat a lot of tuna without worrying about consuming too many calories.

The Dangers of Tuna

However, like all foods, there are inherent dangers in eating too much tuna–or, more specifically, too much of the wrong kind of tuna! You see, not all tuna is created equal. Some tuna is caught from parts of the ocean that is filled with pollution, and thus the meat is filled with heavy metals and toxins, such as mercury. Mercury poisoning is a very real threat, and it’s vital that you understand that if you’re going to keep tuna in its place of prominence in your diet.

The problem with mercury poisoning is that there’s no way to define it. There is no amount that will be toxic to everyone, as everyone’s body responds differently to the metal. Some people can consume far more mercury than others with no negative side effects, while others will experience negative effects with just a small amount of the heavy metal. There is no “official” point at which mercury becomes toxic, so there’s no way to say “just this much and no more”. Your body will tell you when you’ve had too much!

Just remember: tuna is incredibly good for your health, and it’s a very diet and weight loss-friendly food. You can still eat tuna, but you just need to be aware of what you’re putting in your body. Do your research to find the brands or types of tuna that contain the lowest amounts of mercury and heavy metals, and consider investing in these pricier, safer brands. Make sure that you eat the right tuna, and you won’t have to worry as much about heavy metal or mercury poisoning. You’ll get all the benefits of the tuna, without running the dangers that come from being exposed to pollutants and heavy metals.
