Should You Try Filtered Milk?

Milk is one of the healthiest of the dairy products, as it contains a pretty even balance of saturated fat, protein, carbs, and minerals. If you want to be healthy and fit, it’s a good idea to add at least a glass or two of milk to your daily diet. Milk will keep your bones strong, fuel your muscles, and keep your body working well.

But there’s a new kid on the block: filtered milk. It may be just the thing you need to kick your fitness up a notch!

What the Heck is Filtered Milk?

Also known as “ultra-filtered milk”, this is a new drink that has become ultra-popular in recent years. You can find it marketed under the brand name “fairlife” (no caps) or “Hood Simply Smart”.

In essence, filtered milk is milk that has been run through a number of filters during processing. The filters range from large to small, separating the carbs from the protein, the water from the milk, the fat from the sugar, and so on. The filters essentially break down milk into its individual components, separating them completely.

Once the milk is totally filtered, the individual nutrients are recombined using a special formula designed by the filtering company. This “new milk” has much higher amounts of calcium and protein, but the manufacturers add far less sugar and fat into the mix. The lactose is eliminated altogether, making it an ideal drink for the lactose intolerant.

The average bottle of 2% filtered milk contains about 50% more protein, 50% less sugar, and 30% more calcium than regular 2% milk. This means that you are getting more of the nutrients that make milk awesome, while getting less of the things that makes milk less than the optimal food.

Now we come to the big question: should you be drinking this milk? Is it any good for you?

According to a number of nutritionists, it really could be the better choice!

See, the main reason that milk is considered “bad” by many people comes down to two things:

1) The high fat content. The saturated fat in milk increases its calorie content, making it a high-calorie food that must be consumed in limited quantities.

2) The high sugar content. Milk contains a lot of carbs, including lactose. There are many lactose-intolerant people, and anything with lactose can lead to serious dietary problems. Also, the high carb content of milk does affect blood sugar levels.

But with filtered milk, the sugar content is no longer a big issue. The lactose has been removed, so it’s perfectly safe for those with lactose intolerances or sensitivities to drink. The sugar content has been reduced, so it won’t affect blood sugar levels as much.

Add to that the higher protein content, and you have a milk that could double as a sort of protein powder. Instead of having to add more protein powder to your milk, you can simply drink filtered milk and get all the protein you need in your day. This is ideal for those who are trying to get more protein, but who don’t need to consume the same quantities of amino acids as bodybuilders or athletes.

Of course, there is a downside to filtered milk: it’s expensive! While a half-gallon of regular milk will run you about $2 at your local supermarket, filtered milk will run you $5 (plus tax) for 2/5 of a gallon. This makes it nearly three times as expensive as regular milk, but if you want to get more protein and less sugar from the milk you drink, it may be worth it!
