Shoulder Stretch - elbow across chestThis shoulder stretch is a nice, easy one that will loosen up the posterior deltoids (back of the shoulder) and part of the upper back. It is ideal to do this stretch if you plan to do some any kind of rowing movements or pulling exercise. Rowing is a great exercise to help lose weight but you should always warm up the muscles involved in the exercise. It's also a convenient stretch to increase the movement of the shoulder joint and can be done almost anywhere at anytime. If this shoulder stretch is easy you may want to try doing a more complex shoulder stretch.
How to do the Shoulder Stretch * Sit or stand with your arms relaxed by your sides. Lift your left arm and draw it towards your right shoulder as if you're going to brush some hair off the back of your right shoulder. Now hold your left elbow with your right hand, and keeping the left arm relaxed, gently pull the elbow inwards a little. It wont matter if your arm is held straight or bent partly around the neck. Hold this stretch for 20 - 30 seconds. Now repeat for the right shoulder.
You should try not to twist the torso or make any sudden jerks. Again don't force the stretch!
* Remember it's much safer to under stretch than to overstretch. Always remain within the comfortable stretch zone. Never go to the point where you cannot possibly stretch any more as this could do more harm than good! If you feel any pain or discomfort at any stage of the stretch then stop the stretch immediately! Never force a stretch even if you are attempting to increase flexibility.
