Super Whole Grains for Weight Loss

Carbohydrates are the devil. At least that’s what most fad diets are making the average consumer believe. The truth is that we need carbohydrates for energy, and need them to power up our day. The kind of carbohydrates is what makes all the difference. There’s nothing wrong with grains as long as you are eating the right kind. Super whole grains like whole grain rice, amaranth, millet, quinoa and buckwheat are loaded with fiber and actually help with weight loss.

Whole grain rice is a great way to get minerals like magnesium in your diet. It helps your body absorb calcium. Drink all the milk you want but your body can’t absorb it unless it has magnesium with it. Eat some steamed broccoli and steamed brown rice and your body received more calcium than a glass of milk without all the fat that milk has. Vegans get enough calcium; they eat foods that naturally increase their body’s ability to absorb the nutrients of their foods. Amaranth is a grain cultivated by the Aztecs hundreds of years ago. It is a super whole grain for weight loss and is comparable to rice and maize. It’s packed with protein and fiber but it is very high in phosphorus. Phosphorus helps filter out waste in the kidneys. It plays an essential role in how the body stores and uses energy. It is also gluten free and can be used in anything from salad dressings to gluten free bread. It aids weight loss by boosting the metabolism and aids digestion.

Millet is a grain often used in bird feed. It’s gluten free and great for humans as well. You can use it in salads or in substitution for rice. It’s great in a tabouli salad or simply steamed. Millet provides serotonin for the body, a calming and mood boosting food. It’s also a pre-biotic, helps the body keep Candida levels down and provides the digestive system with a healthy amount of micro-flora.

Quinoa, a tiny seed like grain, comes from the mountains of Peru. A staple food of the Incas, known for it’s complete amino acid profile responsible for building muscle. Buckwheat, also known as Kasha, is technically gluten free. Despite the name, buckwheat groats are gluten free and delicious. They’re very filling and packed with fiber and are high in iron. A must eat grain for any one suffering with anemia. Those suffering with celiac disease or those that are gluten intolerant can have buckwheat. It can be steamed or use it in soups to make them hearty.

These grains wont make you fat. They contain a high amount of fiber and are perfect super whole grains for weight loss. The body needs grains for energy and a healthy digestive system. Whole grains are loaded with minerals and vitamins and should be included in every meal. The key is variety. Provide your body with a variety of whole grains and don’t be scared to try something new. They all have distinctive tastes and textures. Find a few to introduce to your family and substitute it for white rice or pastas. It can change an every day meal to something different and exotic. Eat like an Aztec warrior for a day; your body will love it.
