The Most Toxic Food Ingredients to Avoid

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all of the food you put into your body was healthy? Well, dream on pal! The sad truth is that a whole lot of what we eat is loaded with toxins, chemicals, and things that are going to harm your body. Knowing what toxic food ingredients to avoid is an important part of eating healthy, so here are the most harmful things you’ll find in your food:


If it tastes good and looks baked, it’s probably loaded with shortening. Anything that contains partially hydrogenated oil is going to be just as bad, as both the oil and the shortening are trans fats – the kind that clog your arteries and cause obesity problems. They also make it more likely that you’ll develop metabolic syndrome – the combination of high blood pressure, a larger waistline, dyslipidemia, and high fasting blood sugar.

Palm Oil

There are a surprising number of products that contain palm oil, as it’s one of the cheapest oils to produce. The natural palm fats are blasted by hydrogen, and they turn into solid particles of fat that float around – obstructing arteries wherever they go. Basically any food that is fried or deep fried contains palm oil, soybean oil, or corn oil, and the trans fats they’re loaded with will do your body a lot of harm. Palm oil is heart-attack food!

Corn Syrup

For the king of all evils, look no further than high fructose corn syrup. HFCS is sugar in its most refined form, and it’s instantly turned into glucose by your liver- raising your blood sugar levels dangerously. The consumption of HFCS has increased by 2,000% in the last 40 years, meaning that triglyceride levels are higher, hormones are produced to store fat, people eat more than they should, and weight gain is commonplace. If it has HFCS, stay away from it!

White Foods

If you’ll notice, most of the “white” foods in nature are the ones with the least amount of nutrition (think white mushrooms), while the darker foods (think spinach) have the most nutrition. White foods are usually highly processed, and almost all of the nutrients have been bleached out. Whether it’s white rice, white flour, or white bread, both the germ and the bran have been removed – leaving just the wheat that is far too easy for your body to digest. The resulting elevation in your blood sugar levels is harmful, so stay away from “whites”.


If it’s not naturally sweet, it’s an artificial sweetener. Aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose are just three of the worst villains, but there are many more. They promote overeating, and they help carcinogens to form. Stay away from anything “diet” or “light” if you know what’s good for you!


Food is supposed to spoil, as that’s the way of life. Mankind has added preservatives to keep the food good for longer, but these preservatives will harm your body. You’ve got sodium benzoate and potassium benzoate, both of which can cause damage to your thyroid gland. If it’s not fresh, don’t eat it!


Monosodiumglutamate is the best and worst food ingredient mankind has created. It actually makes the body crave food, so it makes all food tastier. However, it’s a harmful ingredient that can mess with your brain chemistry!

The Sodium N’s

Sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite may sound similar, but these two preservatives are some of the worst miscreants in your food – particularly hot dogs and processed meats. They cause metabolic syndrome, colon cancer, and diabetes.


Blue 1 and 2, red 3, yellow 6, and green 3 are food colorings that have been proven to be dangerous, as they are linked to cancer in your kidneys, thyroid gland, adrenal gland, brain, and bladder. Color-free is the way to go!
