Not only that, but they had a 34% lower chance of heart attacks in the first place, and a 36% lower chance of ischemic strokes (blood flow to the brain getting blocked). The good news is that just about any piece of fruit will do. Sure, some are better than others–thanks to their higher antioxidant, fiber, and vitamin content and lower sugar content–but you’ll find that ALL fruits can benefit your body in many ways. Now, this study proves that eating more fruit can help to reduce your risk of heart disease, but it’s vital that you limit your fruit intake to a serving or two per day. Why is that? It all comes down to one thing: sugar.

Fruits are packed with natural sugars, which are easily broken down and absorbed into your body. These sugars provide you with a quick-acting energy source, but they can raise your blood sugar if you eat too much at once. Plus, sugar contains a lot of calories, so each piece/serving of fruit will be at least 100 to 150 calories. If you eat too much fruit every day, you’ll increase your calorie intake beyond “normal” or “healthy” limits, potentially leading to weight gain.
