Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss
Too many of us are heavier than is good for us. We’d all like to drop the pounds as easily as possible without enduring the pain of daily exercise and controlled dieting. We want this magic remedy so much that we are willing to hand over our hard earned money to any charlatan willing to accept it. You need to understand that many companies promote weight loss products by making exaggerated claims that are not backed up by scientific research. You must read the fine print on any claim. Most will say that their product works well combined with diet and exercise. If that’s truly the case, you’re back to square one: exercise more and eat less. There is a way, however, of making your diet more palatable and that is through hypnosis.
Before you howl with laughter, read on. Many people feel that hypnosis is the stuff of cheap nightclub acts and TV comedies. They believe that it is only useful in making people do things against their will. Further, they feel that hypnosis puts them at risk of post-hypnotic suggestions that will cause them to waddle like a duck or bray like a mule upon hearing the phone ring or a particular word said. This is as far from the truth as is possible. Hypnosis has long been used as a form of alternative medicine to deal with cancer, many types of weight surgeries, pain, stress and depression. The prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) sponsors studies into the use of hypnosis as a medical treatment. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine is a part of the NIH. It researches topics like the use of hypnosis in breast cancer treatments as a way to reduce pain, mood swings and enhance coping techniques. Before you begin hypnotherapy, you need to work with a certified hypnotherapist. Preferably someone with a degree in psychology from a recognized university. Together with your therapist, you will explore the reasons why you overeat and want to lose weight. Once that is understood, the therapist will begin the hypnotherapy. The process works because hypnosis places an individual in a state of relaxation and heightened suggestibility. Using hypnosis, the therapist will help you replace your desire to overeat with the motivation to eat healthier and to lose weight. Combining long term hypnosis with a behavioral program designed to alter eating habits usually increases the amount of weight loss. Understand that you may need to go up to eight or more times before the hypnotherapy works. Nothing happens overnight. Hypnosis also involves the use of post-hypnotic suggestions. The hypnotherapist plants an idea in your mind that helps you not want to overeat. Often this involves specific images (such as a slovenly, obese man or woman stuffing themselves with food until they become sick) that repulse you and prevent you from eating that second helping of cake and ice cream. Unfortunately, there are charlatans who will try to capitalize on your desire to be thin. Many are found on the internet. Before you hand over your money to them, do some investigating to see if their claims are genuine. You should definitely avoid any person without a professional background in psychology. There are many people on the internet ready to sell you videotapes, audiotapes, books, CDs or seminars based on their brand of hypnosis as a weight loss method. As mentioned above, hypnotherapy takes time to work. You should, therefore, stay away from individuals and companies that offer to sell you programs that promise to quickly erase old habits and establish new ones. There is no one hour solution! These people are preying on your desire to lose weight quickly and lure you in with low prices. Be overly cautious. Just because an individual appears on a popular daytime talk show does not mean that there is any real scientific basis for their claims. You should also be wary of “real people” testimonials and endorsements as evidence that a particular hypnosis program produces guarantees weight loss of 30-120 pounds after only one session. Most of the people in these ads are actors paid to endorse a product. It is very simple to manipulate so called “before” photos and then dress them up in oversize, baggy clothes to demonstrate their weight loss in the “after” photographs. Ask yourself whether the fact that “Bob in Seattle” used the product means that it will actually work for you. Likewise, if a “doctor” endorses the product, does that mean anything? An actor can portray a doctor and a doctor can have his degree in English Literature. Check out the background of the endorsers. You should also shy away from the product if there is a caveat (usually in fine print at the bottom of the ad) that states “individual results may vary and weight loss is not typical of all users.” In short, let the buyer beware.
