New FDA-approved Weight Loss Product: Alli™

Go on the internet and you’ll find thousands of advertisements for diet products. Usually there are claims that their particular product will reduce a person’s weight. In very small print, they say that the product, along with diet and exercise, produces results that are not typical of the fantastic claims made for it at the top of the ad. How is this possible? Isn’t it deceptive advertising? Actually, no. In 1994, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act created a class of products called “dietary supplements” and said that these were “foods” and not “drugs.” As such, they were exempt from Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversight. The FDA is not required to ensure that manufacturers have documented evidence that they work or are safe. Only prescription drugs have to undergo clinical trials to get pre-market approval.

Americans spend an estimated $33 billion annually on weight loss products. The FDA has approved Alli’s active ingredient, orlistat, as a safe and effective, over-the-counter weight loss product. It works only if the consumer is committed to limiting fat intake, reducing calories, and exercising regularly. If the consumer does not follow the program, it won’t work. Alli is not for everybody. Organ transplant patients should not take alli because of possible drug interactions. Patients taking blood thinning medicines or being treated for diabetes or thyroid disease should consult a physician before using it.

Clinical trials with have consistently shown that is possible to lose about 50% more weight using alli than with just dieting alone. Alli capsules (orlistat 60 mg) are taken with each meal containing fat. It inhibites an enzyme in the pancreas that breaks down triglycerides in the intestine. Fully one quarter of the fat intake is not ingested. Undigested fat cannot be absorbed and passes through the body naturally. The body automatically taps into its fat stores and uses them for the energy it needs. That can result in a safe, gradual weight loss, usually 1-2 pounds per week. Alli does have side effects. If the dieter takes it with a meal containing too much fat, they may have gas with oily spotting, loose skin, and more frequent stools that may be hard to control. Symptoms may last up to 48 hours. Most will stop within a week or two, as the body adjusts to its new diet.

Alli’s success is due to myalliplan™. By registering online, the dieter creates a personal profile. Weight management experts use the dieter’s information to create a tailored weight loss program. They are available 24 hours a day to provide immediate feedback, practical advice and support online. The myalliplan homepage has interactive tools to record eating and exercise habits, make healthy recipes, establish smart meal plans, and make shopping lists. The homepage also provides a dining out guide. There is a section for getting advice from other users of alli. The consumer can also use reference guides inside the alli starter pack, including a Calorie & Fat Counter and a Healthy Eating Guide.

Alli does work. You must closely follow a reduced-calorie, low-fat (no more than 15 grams of fat per meal) diet. Say hello to smaller portions, crunchy vegetables, leafy salads, fruits, beans, reading food labels and counting 1600 calories daily. Alli does not prevent the absorption of carbohydrates and proteins. Say goodbye to fast-food places and sweets. You must have regular physical activity to burn calories and build muscles. Get out of your chair and go for a walk or run. Alli must be taken everyday or it will not work. To help you to remember to take it, the manufacturer has provided the Shuttle™, a bright blue case designed to carry the capsules and make them available at every meal.

Unfortunately, Couch potatoes will have to continue to wait for a miracle pill that will allow them to eat as they like and still lose weight.
