The Purpose of the Diet
The human body has a natural pH level of 7.4, which means it is slightly more alkaline than acid. This is a good thing, as higher levels of acidity can be dangerous. The food you eat can either make your body more acid or alkaline. High-alkaline foods include whole grains, fruits, and veggies. High-acid foods include red meat, processed foods, and anything with sugar. By cutting high-sugar foods from your diet and eating primarily high-alkaline foods, the Alkaline Diet is intended to keep your body at a healthy pH level.
How the Diet Works
This is NOT intended to be a weight loss diet. Instead, it’s a diet meant to promote better overall internal health. You essentially eat a lot of high-alkaline food (such as raw foods and whole grains), while limiting the amount of high-acid foods like sugar, coffee, and artificial foods. The Harsh Truth
Talk to any scientist, and they’ll tell you that your blood pH level is pretty much always going to stay the same. No matter how much alkalizing food you eat, your pH balance won’t change too much. This means that the premise of the diet is VERY flawed. There is no way to promote a high alkaline pH level just by eating. That being said, the diet does have a benefit: it gets you to eat healthy and cut unhealthy foods from your diet. For this reason alone, it may be worth trying.
How Hard is the Diet?
For those who spend a lot of time cooking and eating at home, the Alkaline Diet isn’t too challenging. You can stock up on raw and high-alkaline foods, and make sure your meals include plenty of veggies and fruits. You’ll still need to eat proteins and healthy fats, but you’ll avoid most sugars and the proteins and fats with the highest acidity. However, if you spend a lot of time eating out, you’re going to have a tough time finding food to eat. Restaurants tend to use a lot of butter, oil, cheese, and acidic condiments and sauces. You may have to spend a lot of time at salad restaurants or vegan eateries.
How Does it Work?
One person tried the diet for a week, and published their results in TODAY. They found that the diet was challenging when they were out of the house, but fairly easy when they were at home. They lost about 2 pounds by the end of the week—the typical weight loss when following a healthy diet. However, they reported feeling much better as a result of the diet. They were less bloated than with other diets, and they found it was easier to eat healthier afterward. While it’s not the most effective diet, it is a healthy one worth trying if you want to get your eating habits back under control.
