Wine Carbohydrates

If you’re on a low carb diet you’re probably watching every bite and continually checking the carb content on the nutrition labels. However, you can't forget about your drinks! The juice, soda, flavored water, and alcohol you drink can also be fairly high-carb, so you have to include those in your carbohydrate calculations.

Hard alcohol is mostly low-carb (save for a few, like brandy or cognac), but what about wine? Can you drink a glass of wine without worrying about the carbs (or the calories), or do you need to eliminate it from your diet?

Not entirely, as this table reveals:

(insert table)

As you can see, wine is fairly low in carbs--though not in calories. A glass of wine may not contain as many calories as a can of beer, but it may be more than you want to add to your diet!

Note: It is recommended by most experts that you limit or eliminate alcohol from your diet if your goal is weight loss. Alcohol slows down digestion, adds unnecessary carbs, and causes your body to store fat.

However, if you're thinking about drinking wine, you need to remember that wine can:

Decrease your risk of heart attack -- The resveratrol in red wine is a powerful antioxidant that can improve circulation and improve cardiovascular health. Drinking in moderation can lower your risk of heart attack by 30%, and the tannins in wine will help to protect against heart disease. The best wines to drink for your heart come from southwest France and Sardinia, as they have more antioxidants than other wines.

Extend your lifespan -- Did you know that people who drink wine have a 34% lower mortality rate than people who drink other alcohols like beer or strong liquor? If you want to live longer (and enjoy life), you may want to add a glass of wine or two to your week.

Prevent diabetes --  People who drink wine in moderation have a 30% lower chance of diabetes than those who do not drink. The wine helps to control blood sugar levels, preventing insulin resistance and reducing the risk of Type 2 Diabetes.

Fight colon cancer -- Drinking a few glasses of wine per week is amazing for the health of your colon! Moderate consumption can help to reduce your risk of colon cancer by up to 45%.

Improves brain function -- Your brain tends to decline as you age, but wine can help to prevent that problem--or at least slow it down. People who don't drink wine tend to suffer from age-related mental decline at a faster rate than moderate drinkers.

Prevent strokes -- Blood clots in and around your brain can lead to strokes, but wine helps to reduce your risk of strokes. Drinking wine in moderation can reduce your stroke risk by up to 50%!

Keep your eyes healthy -- Did you know that people who drink wine have a 32% lower chance of developing cataracts than people who don’t? Wine drinkers have a 43% less chance of cataracts than people who drink beer!

While wine does add some carbs to your diet, it can offer health benefits that go far beyond weight loss or fat burning. It's up to you make the decision of whether you value the health benefits wine offers or your efforts for losing weight. Either way, as long as you are trying to get healthy, you will be doing the right thing for your body! Take care of your body, and you will enjoy your life for many, many more years.
