Workouts to Burn More Calories than JoggingJogging is one of the classic cardio workouts, one that most of us try to do at some point or another. It's ideal for fat burning and building cardiovascular endurance. But is it the BEST workout around? Here are a few cardio workouts to burn more calories than you could burn by jogging:
RowingWhether you row indoors or actually get into a boat, rowing is one of the best workouts you can do. It works all of the muscles along your back, butt, and legs, and it can burn A LOT of calories--about 12.5 per minute. Add that up, and that's a lot of calories burned after a 30-minute rowing session. On top of that, it's excellent for strong muscles!
Bike SprintsThe AirDyne stationary bike is designed for hardcore athletes, and if you use it the right way, you can burn up to 87 calories in a single minute. Basically, the faster you pedal, the greater the resistance. For just 60 seconds of work, that's a lot of calories!
Kettlebell SwingsThanks to the explosive nature of this exercise, you burn A LOT of calories while building muscle. You can burn about 20 calories per minute, and you'll keep your heart rate high--up to 90% of your MaxHR for the 20-minute workout. For a great, more effective training session, try kettlebells!
CrossFitAll of the CrossFit workouts are designed to be high intensity, but none of them burn quite as many calories as the "Cindy" workout. It's a combination of pull-ups, push-ups, and squats, with the goal of performing a certain number of each in as little time as possible. It's definitely not an easy workout, as it will push your body hard. But if you get through it without resting too much, you can burn as many as 13 calories per minute. That's 320 calories in just 20 minutes!
Do this workout right, and you'll find yourself breathing hard and sweating like a rockstar. You can burn about 14 calories per minute, and that's performing no more than 10 burpees per minute. Definitely a great muscle-building exercise that does wonders for your cardio.
Jumping RopeThis is one of the most effective cardio workouts across the board, and it's especially effective for those who want to improve their calf strength. Considering that your calves and legs do most of the work, it can help to shape those calves for your runs. If you can do about 100 to 120 skips in a single minute, you'll burn 13 calories. That may not sound like a lot, but it equals a lot of calories burned after a 20 minute workout.
Cross-Country SkiingIf you're lucky enough to live in a part of the country where there is snow, it's time to strap on those skis and start going cross-country. Cross-country skiing is hard work when you're not zipping downhill, as you have to trudge up snow-covered mountains and hills with heavy skis on your feet. Over an hour of cross-country skiing, you burn an average of 12 calories per minute.
Heavy RopesFor one heck of a wicked cardio workout, it's time to pick up those battle ropes/heavy ropes and start flinging away. You'll seriously increase your body's ability to consume oxygen, all while shredding muscle and getting your heart pounding like a drum. With this workout, you can burn over 10 calories per minute. That's a pretty impressive amount considering you're doing nothing more than flinging around heavy ropes attached to a pole.
