Proper digestion is one of the most important functions of the body yet so many people suffer from indigestion, bloat, or they lack absorption of nutrients and vitamins. This is not a problem that can be fixed with a fiber drink, or a laxative. The average person suffers from indigestion and it’s a very common complaint. These include issues like acid reflux, bloat, heartburn, diarrhea, cramping, flatulence, constipation, headaches, nausea, and the list goes on. Symptoms are nothing more than the body trying to communicate, why do we try to shut off the symptoms without looking at the underlying problem, indigestion. Indigestion can be caused by many things. These 3 tips will help you ensure smooth sailing before, during and after you ingest nutritious food.
1. Drink plenty of water:
This seems like a no brainer but the average of person is dehydrated. The body needs water to pass food through the intestines and without the proper amount of water, well, things don’t run as smoothly. Water is necessary to digest and absorb nutrients and vitamins. It detoxifies the liver & kidneys. Your urine should be a light straw color, if not clear. By drinking enough water you can avoid headaches, ulcers, high blood pressures, acid reflux, kidney issues, and even skin disorders. Eat fruits that are high in water content and that will help you as well. Try drinking water first thing in the morning before brushing your teeth and don’t drink or eat at least 45 min. after you brush your teeth. 2. Chew your food
The amount of times you chew obviously depends on the kind of food you’re eating. So try to use common sense on this one. Soft fruits and vegetables break down more easily than meats so you don’t have to choose that as much as meat but you should few anywhere from 5-10 times, and up to 30 times for more denser foods before swallowing. Try shooting for 100. That will get the job done fore sure and will bring awareness to exactly how much chewing it takes. Chewing your food reduces the risk of bacterial growth in your colon which leads to bloat, constipation and indigestion. It also relaxes the lower stomach and releases saliva to break down the food. Chewing sends a message to the gastrointestinal system that food is on its way so maybe chewing gum isn’t the greatest thing to chew on. If you can still feel food in your mouth, then you haven’t chewed enough.
3. Choose your environment wisely
Our environment affects how much you eat and how you digest. If you are eating with a sense of urgency, angry, anxious, or even sad, you may have trouble digesting your food correctly. If you can help it, try sitting at a table or sitting calmly on a pillow on the floor as you eat, chew, swallow and breathe. When you eat your body translates everything into food at that moment, it’s not only what you put into your mouth. The ambience plays a huge part to avoid indigestion.
