8 Steps for a Healthy Life

Small steps can take you a long way over time! To live a happy, healthy life, here are eight small steps to take today:

1.     Cut Back on Trans Fats

Saturated fats are no longer the enemy you thought they were, but trans fats remain as dangerous as ever. They cause high cholesterol levels that clog your arteries and lead to heart problems, so it’s wise to avoid them as much as possible. Any food that is deep fried, overly greasy, or highly processed deserves no place on your menu!

2.     Take a Body Check

Get your body checked out and see if you need to make changes to your current diet and lifestyle habits. Don’t just stand on the scale, but check your BMI and waist circumference as well. These two measurements are a much more accurate reflection of your true condition.

3.     Up Your Activity Levels

Unless you’re killing it at the gym 5 to 6 days per week, you’re probably not doing enough! Besides, you probably spend most of your day sitting at a desk, and that inactivity is going to take its toll on your body. Don’t just rely on the gym for your daily workout, but make it a point to walk more, move around, and do more exercise throughout the day. Come the weekends, avoid sitting in front of the TV all day long but get out and do something active!

4.     Track Your Habits

Are you keeping a food diary and monitoring everything you eat? You’ll be surprised to find that you eat a lot more than you should once you start tracking your eating habits. You should also write down the exercise you do, the time you spend moving around, and the time you spend sitting and relaxing. By the end of a month or so, you may come to realize that your habits need a bit of an adjustment.

5.     Visit the Doctor

If it has been a while since you last visited the doctor, perhaps it’s time for another checkup. Pay the doctor a visit and get a full physical, including the latest immunizations and a screening to ensure that you’re not developing any health disorders. Don’t forget to visit the dentist as well!

6.     Sleep More

You’d be amazed how much better you feel after a good night’s rest! If you’re not sleeping for a solid 7 to 8 hours a night, you’ll notice the difference. Without plenty of sleep, your body is unable to repair itself after a hard day of work. It’s vital that you make sleep a priority, and do whatever is necessary to ensure that you form healthy sleep habits! If that means getting to bed at the same time every night whether or not you’re actually tired, so be it.

7.     Evaluate Your Mood

How happy have you been in the last few weeks or months? Have you been generally happy, or have your days been plagued with anger, moodiness, and stress? You may find that the life you are currently leading isn’t exactly what you want, and that is causing you to be unhappy. Think about the things in your life that may need to change, and make those changes. To be healthy, you have to be happy!

8.     Evaluate Your Friends

This may not sound like a choice to make for a healthy life, but the truth is that having friends boosts your emotional health, which in turn helps to improve your physical wellbeing. Do you have friends that you enjoy spending time with, or do you dread it when they call you to hang out? It’s time to develop friendships with people that will enrich your life!
