Gluten intolerance is becoming more and more common, and it’s amazing how many people discover that they are allergic to gluten. Gluten allergies can be mild – the non-celiac sensitivities – but celiac disorder can actually be quite serious. Most people scoff at gluten allergies, but the sad truth is that it’s a real thing – though only a few people have these allergies.
If you are worried that you’re allergic to gluten, here are the signs to keep an eye out for:
Immediately after eating gluten, you will usually feel very fatigued. It’s normal for your energy levels to drop after you eat a huge meal, as your body has to produce insulin to combat high blood sugar – and the insulin causes a drop in your blood sugar. However, if you feel more fatigued than normal, you may find yourself feeling very tired after a meal – even if you only ate small portions. Gluten intolerance will almost always exhaust you, so that you’ll be forced to rest after eating.
Headaches are not a problem in themselves, but they are almost always a sign of something else going on in your body. If you get a headache after eating, it may be nothing more than tiredness or indigestion. However, most people allergic to gluten will get a headache within 30 minutes of eating it, and it may be a more painful headache – even a migraine. There is no type of headache that is known to be linked to gluten intolerance, but they’re something to watch out for.
When people notice that they have digestive issues after eating gluten, they usually attribute it to IBS or indigestion. However, you will find that indigestion caused by gluten is a sign that you have a non-celiac gluten intolerance. This means that your body is sensitive to the nutrient, rather than treating it as an invading pathogen like it does with a celiac disorder.
This is an interesting side effect of being allergic to gluten. Those that have gluten allergies tend to feel very irritable after eating gluten, and they may feel the same irritability they feel when they get sick or have a cold. Some people have even reported being unable to focus or concentrate after eating gluten, and their mind tends to wander. This in turn makes them even more irritable when they can’t focus on their work.
Issues in Extremities
Have you noticed that your hands, feet, elbows, or knees begin to tingle after a heavy meal – one with lots of gluten-rich products? If this happens, it may be a sign that you are allergic to gluten. You may also feel pain in your joints, or you’ll feel like your extremities are going numb.
Have you noticed any of the symptoms listed above? In addition, have you noticed that you’ve got a rash breaking out on your skin, you’ve had stronger PMS symptoms, you’ve felt depressed or moody more often, or your weight has been changing? If so, you’re allergic to gluten! It’s time to get yourself to a doctor and get checked out.
The good news is that there are a lot of tests that your doctor can run to determine whether or not you’re allergic to gluten, or whether it’s a celiac disorder. The tests will reveal the truth for sure, and you’ll have to make the effort to cut gluten out of your life. It’s not the most pleasant thing, but you’ll notice that the side effects of being allergic to gluten will go away when you stop eating it!
