Best Cardio Workouts for Beginners

If you’re new to the world of fitness and working out, it may be tough for you to know where to get started. After all, with all the machines and equipment at the gym, you may have no idea what to do first.

Start with the Basics: Walking

You should always start with the simplest exercise first, so get on that treadmill and get walking. Don’t worry about picking up the pace yet, but just get used to the rhythm and the feel of the treadmill. Many people have a hard time with it, but it’s easy to use once you get used to it.

Once you’re accustomed to the speed, it’s time to add a bit more speed. Turn up the speed until you’re walking at a brisk pace, and swing your arms to make it easier to walk fast. Keep walking for about 45 to 60 minutes, and you’ll be doing great!

Take it Up a Notch: Jogging and Cycling

Want to go a bit harder? Why not try jogging? You can jog anywhere between 4 and 5 miles per hour, and that will be a great pace you can usually keep up for half an hour or more. Just make sure to breathe deep, and get your heart working.

If you don’t want to jog (or if it hurts your joints), why not go the cycling/spinning route? Most gyms have stationary bikes, and they make it easy for you to get a great cardio workout. You don’t have to make the workout too intense, but keep those legs pumping and working hard. By the time you’re done with your 45 minute cycling session, you’ll have burned A LOT of calories.

Go Hard: HIIT Training

Ready to go the distance in your cardio training? It’s time to not just start running, but to run as fast as you can. Set the treadmill to jogging speed, and spend a few minutes trotting along at a slow pace. Do this for about four minutes, and then turn the speed up as high as you can handle. Race with the treadmill for a minute, letting your legs do the work and focusing on breathing rhythmically. You’ll find that after just 1 minute of sprinting, you’ll be breathing hard. When you go back to jogging, it will be much easier for you to keep the slow pace. Do this for 20 minutes for an amazing workout!

Add Some Upper Body: Elliptical

Why not add in a bit of upper body workout at the same time? You’ll find that the elliptical machine works out both lower and upper half, and it will help you to get in a good shoulder, arm, and lat workout without noticing.

Just grip the handles of the Cross Trainer elliptical machine, and push them back and forth as you walk. Use the strength of your arms as well as the movement of your legs, and you’ll get an excellent cardio workout.

Other Options

Who says you have to do all the boring gym stuff? Instead of hitting the gym every day, why not get your cardio in by dancing, swimming, skateboarding, mountain biking, hiking, trail running, or practicing martial arts. You’ll find that there are so many fun ways to get in shape, though the ones listed above are the best and most effective. As long as you’re working hard, however, you’ll find yourself getting more and more fit with each passing day!
