Did you know that sleep can be affected by your personality type? It may sound crazy, but it’s absolutely true! According to a paper published in the Lancet Journal, certain personality traits can have an effect on your sleep habits. Depending on who you are as a person, you may have a higher or lower risk of insomnia.
Type 1: Highly Distressed
Type 1 people are categorized as “highly distressed”. This means they tend to feel not only more active before bedtime, but they tend to be more anxious as well. They may be consumed by thoughts of their day, concerns over the next day, or worries for the future. Their higher anxiety and activity levels at night tend to affect their sleep, making it more difficult for them to doze off. These people are also at a higher risk of depression, which can affect sleep quality as well.
Type 2: Moderately Distressed, Reward Sensitive
Type 2 people are also fairly active and anxious at night, though not as much as Type 1 people. However, they tend to be more receptive to positive emotions. They can feel happier than Type 1 people, and those pleasurable feelings can enable them to get to sleep. On the other hand, stress can be a trigger for insomnia far worse than Type 1 people. Many Type 2 people actually experience sleep-related stress, feeling anxious and stressed out if/when they can’t get to sleep. This ultimately keeps them awake, compounding their stress.
Type 3: Moderately Distressed, Reward Insensitive
Type 3 people tend to have active and anxious minds, but they aren’t as receptive to positive and pleasurable emotions. They tend to have a more pessimistic outlook, and trend toward the unhappy in their lives. They’re less prone to depression than those who are sensitive to rewards, however, which makes them less prone to depression-caused insomnia and sleep difficulties. They may actually have an easier time getting to sleep than Type 1 and 2 people, despite their unhappiness.
Type 4: Slightly Distressed, High Reactivity
Type 4 people tend to be less stressed out over life issues, so it isn’t the stress that impacts their sleep. However, it’s life EVENTS that cause them stress and sleep problems: financial troubles, divorce, breakups, fights with their spouse or friends, etc. This personality type is the one most likely to lose a lot of sleep after a difficult breakup or big life event, and they are the ones most affected by it for the longest amount of time. These people also tend to have childhood traumas that affect them, affecting not only their sleep quality, but their life overall.
Type 5: Slightly Distressed, Low Reactivity
Type 5 people tend to suffer the same insomnia related to big and difficult life events, but their reactions are less intense. They also have lower instances of childhood trauma. Their personality type tends to be low in motivation, and their insomnia is more prone to developing in their middle ages (40+).
What Does This Mean?
