Diet Rules You SHOULD Break

We all have rules that help us stay faithful to our diet. Some rules go along the lines of “Don’t eat after a certain time of night”, while others are more like “Don’t eat those foods”.

But why are we so focused on the rules that we end up suffering? If you want to diet successfully, it’s time to break a few of your diet rules–the smart way of course! Here are a few diet rules you SHOULD be breaking:

Rule #1: Be Strict

Being strict with your diet will only lead you to cheat on said diet. The best way to be certain that you’re actually sticking with your diet is to have a bit of fun and add some flexibility to it. Don’t be so strict that you end up suffering through the days, but make sure that you allow yourself a day or two where you can enjoy a few extras. It will make it much easier for you to push through on the big things when you know you have a few “cheat” moments.

Rule #2: No Snacking

Your body is going to find it tough to live on just three small meals per day, so it’s silly to even try forcing yourself to avoid snacking. Instead, channel your energy into snacking on foods that are healthy! Think air-popped popcorn, whole wheat pita chips, fruit salad, and veggie sticks. You can still make delicious food, but without all the calories.

Rule #3: Ditch Red Meat

You may think that cutting red meat will help you to cut calories, but that’s a mistake. Red meat is high in calories, but it’s also high in B vitamins. You shouldn’t cut red meat altogether, but just reduce the amount that you eat. Stick with 150 grams of red meat per week, and it won’t be a problem.

Rule #4: Say “No” to Cravings

The hardest thing you will have to do is to say “No!” when those cravings come. You can try to distract your mind from the cravings, but truth be told it’s pretty tough to. Instead of struggling against the cravings, channel that energy into eating something that is tasty but low-calorie. For example, if you crave chocolate, why not eat a bit of unsweetened dark chocolate instead of holding out altogether?

Rule #5: Only Drink Light Beer

Light beer isn’t too much lower in calories than regular beer. To add to that, beer isn’t the best drink for weight loss anyways. You should try to stick with red wine, or drink one robust beer instead of trying to force yourself to only down light beer. One heavy beer is much more satiating than three light beers.

Rule #6: Stay Away from Fats

Did you know that eating fat is the key to burning fat? If you don’t have ANY fat in your diet, your body will cling to it like it’s going into starvation mode. If you do eat a bit of fat, it will be much easier to burn. Stick with the healthy, unsaturated fats as much as possible, but don’t be so afraid of fat that you avoid it altogether.

Rule #7: Control Portion Sizes

You’d be amazed by how stressful it can be to try and rigorously control your portion sizes. If you are trying to lose weight over a long period of time, what matters is that you control the amount you eat per day, not per meal. If you want to go big at lunch, just have a tiny dinner. Make sure that you’re sticking to your DAILY calorie requirements, and you’ll be fine!
