So, you’ve just finished your early morning or mid-day workout, and you have to rush off to work in a hurry. The last thing you want is to show up at the office dripping sweat. The problem is, your workout has boosted your metabolism, so your body is burning calories to produce energy even after you finish training. This can increase your body temperature, causing you to sweat more. Thankfully, we’ve got a few tips on how to stop sweating after you complete your workout:
Hydrate Your Skin
You have just come out of an intense workout that made you sweat a lot, so your body has lost a lot of water. A good deal of the moisture came from just beneath your skin. If you’re not careful, this could lead to problems with dry skin. You need to moisturize in order to keep your skin healthy. But DON’T slather a thick cream on your skin right after your shower. Give your body about half an hour to cool off and dry off, and then apply the moisturizing cream. If you apply the cream too early, it could trap the heat in your body and make you sweat even more.
Choose the Right Clothes
If you have to go to work in a suit and tie, you’re guaranteed to keep sweating for up to an hour after the workout. Instead of jumping out of the shower and slipping right into your work clothes, lounge around in a T-shirt and a comfortable pair of pants for a few minutes. If you have to leave to work right away, wear only a loose cotton T-shirt and bring your suit and tie in your car on a hanger. You can slip them on in the parking lot to avoid showing up to work sweaty.
Sit and Relax
One of the best ways to reduce your risk of sweating is to let your body cool down. The only way that’s going to happen effectively is if you stop moving around. Activity causes your body to burn energy, but inactivity helps to reduce the amount of energy burned. If you’ve got a few minutes after your shower, sit and relax with a good book or the newspaper. Just 10 to 15 minutes will be enough to help your body temperature drop down to normal, and you can go about your day without excessive sweating.
Cool Your Wrists
So you’ve taken a shower to help cool down but it’s not working? If you’re still sweating a while after you take your shower, apply ice to your wrists. Or, hold your wrists under a flow of cold water. The cold will hit the large blood vessels near the surface of your skin, and will help you to cool down faster. It’s a simple trick, but it works like a charm!
Set the Shower Temperature Right
Your shower temperature can have a huge effect on your cooling down. Shower with water that’s too hot, and you’ll add to the heat coming off your skin. Shower with water that’s too cold, and you will force your body’s internal thermostat to produce more heat to survive the cold water. To top it off, you’ll cause your blood vessels to contract, preventing the excess heat from escaping. Instead, shower with water that’s roughly room temperature. You want a nice, warm shower after your workout. Room temperature water will help you to cool off, but it won’t let you get cold. It’s the perfect way to stop sweating after you finish your workout!
