Fitness and Vacation: Bringing the Two Together

There is nothing more relaxing than taking a nice vacation, traveling off to some unexplored corner of the country to see new sights and experience new things. The problem with this ‘relaxing’ time is that it’s often too relaxing, and you end up spending all of your time kicking back, enjoying the sun, tasting good food, and finding excuses why you just can’t get up the energy to stay fit.

Yep, fitness and vacation don’t really go together that well, at least not naturally. If you’re going to stay fit while on vacation, you’re going to have to work at it. Here are a few things you can do to keep up with your fitness while luxuriating on your holidays:

Hit the Pool or Gym — Don’t want to run on the hot streets of the sunny beach town you’re visiting? Why not hit the hotel gym, and work up a good sweat while pumping iron? You can also take your exercise to the pool, which is far cooler than the hot streets and will help you get a great cardio workout. There are few cardio workouts as good as 30 to 45 minutes of steady swimming, and your whole body will be tired by the time you’re done. Afterwards, you’ll have earned that hefty dinner that is so common on vacations.

Work out in the Room — If the heat of the city or beach town is just too oppressive, no doubt you’re going to spend most of your time relaxing in your bedroom. Did you know that you can get a great workout without ever having to leave the room? There are hundreds of YouTube videos that will help you get a complete body workout in your hotel room, and you’ll be able to keep up with your fitness regimen without having to suffer the heat.

Count Calories — This is one thing that you’ll hate, but it’s an important part of your efforts to bring fitness and vacation together. That breakfast buffet may help you to enjoy your morning, but too many days of feasting will pack on those pounds that you’ve tried to lose over the last few months. It’s time to start counting the number of calories you eat every day, and keep track of what you’re eating. If you eat too many calories at breakfast, limit yourself for the rest of the day. It’s the only way to avoid the vacation weight gain that’s so common.

Do Active Activities — If there is one thing that’s sure to get you sweating and working up an appetite, it’s taking a mountain hike to a jungle spring, scuba diving, climbing a cliff, or doing any other outdoor activity. The key to staying in shape on your vacation is to find more outdoor activities to do – activities that get your heart pumping and your muscles burning. Whether it’s hiking, climbing, ziplining, or swimming, get out of your hotel room and get active!

Avoid Overdrinking and Overeating — Some people just can’t count calories when on vacation, as it’s too stressful. However, try and limit the amount of eating that you do while on vacation, as that will help you avoid gaining weight. Have one large meal a day, and make the other two meals small and healthy. Also, stay away from the bar most nights. Drinking alcohol will not only add more calories, but it will slow you down the next day. There’s nothing wrong with having a few drinks with your lunch or dinner, but don’t let a few drinks turn into a hangover the next day!

Fitness and vacation can go hand in hand, but it’s going to take some work on your part!
