How Many Calories in Alcohol

Who doesn’t love a bit of alcohol at the end of the day? There’s nothing like a cold beer or a glass of wine to help you kick back and relax!

Sadly, alcohol is not a diet-friendly choice. Most alcohols contain sugar, which will add to your caloric intake. Alcohol also slows down your metabolism and your digestion, which is why most hardcore weight loss fanatics cut alcohol.

But should you really be eliminating alcohol altogether? Is it really all that bad for you?

Here is what you need to know about how many calories in alcohol there are:

As you can see, beer is definitely at the top of the list when it comes to calories. Most wines and hard liquors are lower in calories,  but are they better for you than beer?

Here are the diet-friendly alcohol choices to consider:

Red Wine — Not only is red wine fairly low in alcohol (roughly 110 calories per glass), but you’ll find that it’s AMAZING for your heart. It contains resveratrol, an antioxidant that will strengthen the heart muscles and boost circulation. A single glass of red wine per day is an acceptable addition to your diet.

White Wine — If you opt for the drier whites (with less sugar), you’ll find that they can make a wonderful addition to your weight loss diet. A glass of chilled white also contains antioxidants (though not as many as red), but often less sugar. Red wine may be the healthier choice, but you can always opt for a glass of white if you want to switch things up.

Scotch — Scotch is a drink to consider if you need something harder, but don’t want to overdo it on the calories. Scotch can help to reduce the pain of your intense workout or sore muscles. It can also improve your circulation, boost your immune system, and increase your body’s production of good HDL cholesterol. No more than two fingers, once or twice per week!

Vodka — Vodka contains almost no sugar, making it one of the best hard alcohols to drink. It can help to reduce pain, relieve stress, and improve sleep. In fact, vodka has been proven to increase your drowsiness, making it a good alcohol to have before bed. A single shot is all you need to make it that little bit easier to drift off.

Tequila — Tequila is more than just a party drink: it could also promote weight loss! According to recent research, the agavins (a form of natural sugar) in tequila do not raise your blood sugar levels, as they cannot be digested. The agavins also help you to eat less, produce more insulin, and prevent hunger pangs from kicking in. Once again, a single shot is all it takes to help you out!

Martini — A martini contains either vodka or gin, both of which are diet-friendly choices. Gin is made from juniper berries, and it is a natural painkiller, antiseptic, and vasodilator. You’ll find that it will help you to be healthier, provided you drink in moderation!

Light Beer — While dark beer is very good for your heart, it’s VERY high in calories and contains more alcohol. More alcohol means a slower metabolism and digestion, as well as a greater toll on your liver. With light beer, however, the caloric intake is MUCH lower (just 100 calories per can/bottle), so you won’t have to worry about overdoing it. But remember, beer is much more likely to cause bloating and weight gain, so it’s probably best to limit yourself to a beer or two per week.
