When you go on a diet, there’s no way to avoid diet hunger pangs. Dieting usually means cutting back on the number of calories you consume, so you end up giving your stomach only a percentage of what it’s accustomed to eating. This basically tells your stomach that you’re hungry, causing your stomach to growl and your hunger cravings to kick in. If you’re going on a diet, here are a few ways to fight those inevitable diet hunger pangs:
Follow the Rules
Your diet has a certain structure you are following. Perhaps it’s a certain number of calories you can eat at every meal or per day, or you can only eat between certain times of day. Whatever the “rules of engagement” are, follow them! It takes the guess work out of dieting, and will help you to stick with your efforts to scale back your food consumption.
Narrow Your Food Choices
A strict diet may not be easy, but it certainly takes the guesswork out of dieting! For example, the Paleo Diet is a good option, as it limits your food choices to ONLY the foods you would eat in the Paleolithic Era. There’s no need to wonder if certain types of flour are healthier than others or whether full fat milk is better than skim milk. By narrowing your food choices, you take a lot of the mental questioning out of the dieting process. This frees up your mind to focus on sticking with the diet, no matter how difficult it is.
Ditch the Garbage
One of the worst things you can do is keep junk food and snacks on hand while you are dieting. There’s no way you’ll be able to resist the temptation to eat them, and always at the wrong time. If you’re serious about your diet, it’s time to get rid of the snacks completely. Don’t just store them out of sight–throw them away! Get rid of anything unhealthy from your house, and you’ll have no way to cheat on your diet at home.
Eat More Protein
Protein is one of the most enjoyable parts of your meals! There’s nothing like a good steak, chicken drumstick, cup of yoghurt, or slice of cheese to help you feel satisfied with your meal. Plus, protein is very filling, and it will satiate your body’s need for nutrients. A higher-protein diet is the key to more effective weight loss. Plus, you’ll find that it will be much easier to stick with your diet, as you are satiated from all the delicious, filling protein you’re consuming.
If you are having a hard time ignoring the rumbling in your stomach, it’s time to take your mind off the problem! Watch your favorite TV show, break out an awesome video game, or do something–anything–that occupies your mind. Read a book, play a board game, talk to a friend, or go for a walk. Your hunger pangs are often nothing more than cravings, which diminish after 3 to 5 minutes. Distract yourself for those few minutes, and you’re far less likely to give in to the hunger!
Stop Worrying About Filling Up
Most people don’t stop eating until they feel “full”, but that’s a huge mistake! The human body doesn’t need that much food–in fact, you’re doing your body a disservice by eating that much. Don’t try to eat until you’re full, but eat until you have satisfied your body’s need for nutrients. Only eat as much as you need, and drink more water to help you fill up.
