Vacation is a wonderful time to kick back, enjoy your summer, and spend time doing those things you love. Sadly, it’s often the time when we let our diets and workout slide because we’re too busy having fun and relaxing to be bothered. There’s a certain amount of summer weight gain to be expected from your holiday, unless you do it right. Here is how to stay fit on holiday no matter where you go or what you do:
Watch Your Meals
You may not be sticking to your diet perfectly, but you can certainly be careful in what you put in your body. Ideally, start the day with a big breakfast, and have a good-sized lunch to keep you going throughout the day. It may be tempting to have all your drinks and snacks in the evening, but you’ll be better off if you cut off your food and alcohol intake around 5 or 6 PM. And when you do eat, try to find foods that are healthy. At that hotel breakfast buffet, load up on the high-protein and high-fiber foods as much as possible.
Travel by Foot
There are so many wonderful things to do and see in each city you’re going to visit during your holiday. You can explore them all from the back of a bus or taxi cab, but you might just find you enjoy it more walking around on foot. Not only will you get to explore the parts of the city the bus would never take you, but you’ll get a great workout in at the same time. Or, if you’re not big on walking, look for bike rentals in your city. You can get around a lot faster but still get in a great workout as you explore the wonders of the city.
Try Active Activities
One of the best things about vacation is that you can try new things that you’d never be able to do back home. Why not try something active? Get in a few hours of surfing, take a ride on a paddleboard, hike a nearby mountain, or go rock climbing. There are so many different active activities you can do that will get your heart racing and your blood pumping. If you want to stay fit on holiday, fit in at least one active activities into every day of your trip.
Try Something New
There are a lot of destination-specific activities you can try, from skiing in the Alps to rock climbing in Joshua Tree National Park to hiking the Appalachian Trail. Think about outdoor adventures you’ve never tried, then set up a vacation around those activities. You’ll find it’s much easier to stay in shape if your entire holiday revolves around fitness-related activities.
Fit in a Morning Gym Session
This may be hard to do, but it’s worth it! If you’re staying at a hotel with a fitness center, get up early and fit in that morning training session. That way, you’ll earn those delicious meals you’re going to enjoy the rest of the day, and you’ll kick off each of your holidays with a metabolism-boost.
Use Your Bodyweight
You don’t even need a gym to get in a good workout—you can train in the comfort of your hotel, motel, B&B, or hostel bedroom using nothing but your own bodyweight. There are tons of YouTube videos you can use or apps you can download to help you plan a daily bodyweight workout routine to get your body ready for a day of vacationing. Totally worth a few minutes of exercise!
