How Your Body Tells You Your Diet is Bad

How many diets have you tried in order to lose weight? 5? 10? 50? With so many diets around, it’s easy to get sucked into one diet after another. But it’s been well-established that not all “popular” diets are healthy–in fact, the more popular it is, the less likely it is to be healthy! If you’re trying any of these fad or popular diets, it’s important that you listen to your body. Here’s how your body tells you your diet is bad:


If your body isn’t getting enough of the nourishment it needs, your skin will start to show it! It will look old, dry, and may even develop problems like acne, rosacea, or psoriasis. A lack of certain vitamins and fatty acids can cause your skin to age prematurely.

Unhealthy Hair

If your hair is feeling dry, brittle, and roughly the same texture as straw, you’ll find that it’s probably the result of your diet! Your hair follicles need proper nourishment in order to keep your hair growing healthy, but if you’re not getting enough protein, minerals, vitamins, and healthy fats in your diet, your hair will suffer. Low-protein diets usually lead to hair problems, as do a lack of Vitamin C, zinc, and iron.

Poor Oral Health

Bad breath is one of the major hallmarks of a poor diet! If you are burning a lot of stored body fat, you will likely suffer from pretty bad breath. If you are losing teeth, your gums are bleeding, and you have a perpetual film of gunk or grit in your mouth, it’s another good indication that you’re not getting the nutrients you need. High sugar diets can lead to cavities, but you can still develop other oral health problems when you’re not eating enough healthy food.

Reduced Brain Function

Do you feel like you have wool packed in your head? Is your mind sluggish and tired all the time? If so, it could be a sign that you’re body isn’t getting all the nutrients it needs. Your brain needs healthy fatty acids in order to function, so a low-fat diet can lead to a serious deficiency of the fats needed by your brain. You don’t need to eat high-fat foods all the time, but consuming foods like flax-seeds, fish, and olive oil will help to keep your brain functioning well!

Excessive Weight Changes

If you are gaining or losing a lot of weight at once, it’s a pretty good sign that your diet is NOT a healthy one. A “healthy” amount of weight to lose is between 1 and 3 kilograms per week (depending on body size and BMI). If you lose or gain more than this amount of weight, it’s a good indication that your diet is not a good one.

Slow Healing

Is that tiny cut or minor burn taking a lot longer to heal than normal? Are your injuries lasting longer and healing more slowly? If so, it could be a pretty good sign that you’re not getting enough nutrients in your diet. A lack of essential minerals, vitamins, proteins, and fats could be slowing down your body’s natural healing.


Fatigue is more than just being tired–it’s a bone-deep weariness that you may feel even after waking up from a nap or a night of sleep. Fatigue is a surefire sign something is wrong, either with your diet or your lifestyle.

Digestive Problems

If your stomach aches, you suffer from diarrhea or constipation, or you feel gassy and bloated, you may be eating the wrong thing–or not enough of the right thing!
