When it comes to losing weight, neither Pilates nor Yoga will be your idea exercise. You need high intensity exercise that pushes your body, and resistance training and cardiovascular exercise will be your combination for optimal weight loss.
However, Yoga has been proven to actually prevent weight gain, and it can help to tighten up the belly, thigh, and butt flab that may embarrass you come bikini season. You can burn up to 250 calories in a 60-minute session of Power Yoga, while an advanced Pilates routine will burn up to 275 calories in the same amount of time. When it comes down to it, neither will be your ideal weight loss exercise.
Pilates vs Yoga: Toning
If you just want to look good, you’ve come to the right exercises. In the war of Pilates vs Yoga, both are awesome for tightening up that loose skin and firming up your muscles. It’s like you are doing high rep, low weight workouts, especially if you do Power Yoga.
A good Power Yoga routine involves a lot of push-ups, Warrior poses (great for your legs), and postures that engage your core muscles. Pilates, on the other hand, is just as good for your muscles, and you’ll notice excellent toning in the first few months. You won’t build massive strength, but you can definitely tone up your muscles thanks to these two types of exercise.
Pilates vs Yoga: Difficulty
The truth is that both workouts are quite difficult, in their own way. Yoga is all about holding the poses, many of which can be incredibly tough (take it from me, I’ve tried and failed over and over with some of them). Your muscles will be trembling, and you’ll feel the burn after just a few minutes in the chair pose – or any of the many other challenging poses.
Pilates, on the other hand, isn’t as much about the challenge of the poses, but it’s about the incredibly intense core and stomach exercises you will do. Exercises like “the hundred” and others will have your muscles burning, but you won’t be breathing deeply. Neither Yoga nor Pilates are about aerobics, but they can both be quite intense.
Pilates vs Yoga: Other Benefits
Yoga is all about relaxing, meditation, finding inner peace, and aligning your body and spirit. You’ll find that doing Yoga is very peaceful and de-stressing, but it’s also excellent exercise. If you’re looking for a new way to get your body in shape, you’d be amazed at how great you’ll look thanks to the Yoga poses and exercises. However, its amazing stress-reducing benefits are what make it so awesome.
Pilates is all about your posture, your flexibility, your core strength, your balance, and your coordination. You will find that the muscles in your body will become firmer and stronger, and you will have a lot more control over your body movements. The workouts can be pretty intense until your core gets used to the exercise.
The truth is that neither Pilates nor Yoga are better than the other, as they are both great forms of exercise. I prefer Yoga to Pilates, but it’s up to you to decide which is better for you!
