If you’re alive and kicking, then you can bet that you’ve had glucose recently. To put it simply, glucose is a form of sugar that travels throughout your bloodstream in order to fuel the mitochondrial furnaces that provide power for your brain.
Normally, glucose is the only type of fuel your brain cells will burn and use. The bloodstream delivers glucose constantly because neurons are unable to store it. It can be stored in the body in other ways, however, and having high glucose levels can be the sign of something more serious.
While the body does need glucose to thrive, too much glucose can actually have an opposite effect.
When you ingest too much glucose, your brain actually stops using it.
When ingesting too much you could suffer from:
- A lack of concentration
- Memory gaps
- Diminished energy levels
- Possible weight gain (as the body converts sugars to stored fat)
- And even weight-loss (if there’s a more serious problem)
Prolonged high glucose levels can even lead to more serious problems such as:
- Nerve damage
- Kidney failure
- Cardiovascular disease
It’s important to maintain healthy glucose levels in your bloodstream, and having too much glucose (high blood sugar) can lead to many problems or can be the result of existing and undiagnosed problems.
Problems Causing High Glucose Levels
Believe it or not, some drugs you take can cause the body’s glucose levels to become high and stay that way for prolonged periods of time, potentially leading to more serious conditions. Steroids are one of the most common types of drug that will affect blood sugar levels.
Not that anyone needs another negative on the list to realize alcoholism is bad news, but the sugars found in most alcohol can cause your glucose levels to become and stay high.
Lack of Exercise/Obesity
Being overweight can cause your body’s glucose levels to stay rather high. Exercise is essential in regulating your body’s blood sugar levels. Your brain simply cannot burn off most of the glucose people ingest in this modern era; so physical activity needs to supplement the body’s natural glucose-burning abilities. And being overweight means you’re overeating, and overeating means you’re most likely eating too many sugars, thus causing elevated blood sugar.
In some circles, the jury is still out over the effects of stress on the human body. For all intents and purposes, stress is something that’s emotional rather than physical. That being said, emotions are as real as anything else, and having elevated stress levels can easily lead to elevated glucose levels.
Diabetes is the most common cause of elevated blood sugar levels. And with this disease, elevated blood sugar can be extremely dangerous, even potentially deadly. Diabetes is a group of diseases, with different types (1, 2, and gestational), and causes an individual to have high blood sugar levels, either because the person’s body does not produce enough insulin, a carb and fat-regulating hormone, or because the body ‘s cells are unable to react to insulin that is produced.
