Staying Vegetarian While at Work or School

Being a vegetarian can be pretty tough in the U.S., as our country isn’t too focused on eating natural, healthy foods. There is just so much junk food available both at work and at school, as cafeteria, office lunch rooms, snack machines, and local eateries often only serve quick foods that people enjoy – most of which are loaded with animal products.

Staying faithful to your vegetarian diet is challenging, but it is possible. Here are some tips to help you at work or at school:

Look for Colors

When you are looking around for vegetarian foods at work or school, the best ones to find are the colorful ones. They will be much more filling, and you’ll make it through your day without those hunger pangs. Of course, local cafeterias and luncheons may not offer a great selection of colorful veggies – salad is so much cheaper – but try to find local eateries that do provide you with these healthy treats!

Have Snacks Handy

If you are at school or at the office, the last thing you want to do is suffer from hunger pangs when there is nothing for you to eat. There are many vegetarian snacks that you can buy at the vending machines, such as granola bars, peanuts, and other cereal bars. You may want to bring your own snacks with you, such as peanut butter sandwiches, bananas, a bag of popcorn, or a variety of dried fruits and nuts. The more of these foods you eat, the easier it will be for you to avoid being hungry before you get home at night.

Consider Protein-Rich Foods

Just because you’re a vegetarian, that doesn’t mean that you don’t need protein – quite the opposite in fact! You need more protein, and you need to make sure that you get complete proteins. Tofu is an excellent protein to consider, and pretty much anything containing soy should be on your menu. Beans and lentils make for an excellent source of healthy protein, and adding a bit of rice to the meal will make it a complete protein. The more protein you get, the healthier you’ll be.

Find Substitutes

If you’re a hardcore vegan or a vegetarian that doesn’t eat eggs, it’s time to look into substitutes for these healthy, filling foods! There are many soy-based meat substitutes, and they’ll be your best option for eating plenty of protein without consuming animal flesh. Egg Beater is a good substitute for eggs, and it doesn’t actually taste too bad. You need lots of protein, so look into getting your protein from these alternative sources.

Eat Fish and Eggs

For those who aren’t pescetarians or vegans, fish is definitely a protein that you need to add to your diet. Fish contains lots of B12, one of the best vitamins for everyone’s health! Without Vitamin B12, your body would slow down and start to have a number of health problems. Fish are an excellent source of Vitamin B12, as are eggs. If you aren’t allowed to eat fish on your vegan diet, look into a B12 supplement. You need a lot of this healthy vitamin, so make sure to get as much as possible from other sources if you aren’t going to get it directly from the live sources!


Being a vegetarian can be tough, but not impossible. You’ll have to be a lot more conscious of the food that you eat, but you don’t have to become so strict that you can never enjoy your food. Make these simple tips above a regular habit, and it will be much easier for you to stay vegetarian while at work or school.
