We don’t go into the holiday season knowing that we’re going to put on weight. In fact, most of us don’t think of it at all, and if we do it’s usually reconciled and filed under the “guilty pleasure” category – a necessity, a celebration.
However, without fail, millions of people are singing the blues come mid January, once they find that their clothes no longer fit due to holiday weight gain.
It all boils down to a simple demand for most people this season – they want to know how to stop from getting fat over the holidays!
The good news: it can be done. The bad news: you’ll have to do it!
Tips on Preventing Holiday Weight Gain
1. Meet Meat
Inevitably, about 90% of the foods you’ll eat—typically—around the holidays are loaded down with carbs. Oh, you don’t think that’s right? Well, outside of the turkey, duck, roast beef and other proteins, what else is there?
Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, mac-n-cheese, gravy, rolls, and enough desserts to last an entire year – yeah, it’s carb-loaded stuff. With that in mind, this holiday season, it’s about eating more protein and fewer carbohydrates.
That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a dessert. You shouldn’t deprive yourself of anything. It just means that you’re going to have to put an extra slice of lamb on the plate and take off one of those sides. 2. Survey the Surroundings
The idea here is to take a tally of your body now and to tell yourself that you’re not going to gain any weight. Yeah, you don’t want to see that scale. But it’s a must. 4. Do Winter Cleaning
It’s all about staying active here, it’s vital to stopping holiday weight gain. You can find many, many things to do every single day of the holiday season to stay active. Working out is always the best option, but cleaning the house, raking the yard, giving the automobiles a winter cleaning, etc, are all ways to stay active and to stop from putting on weight this season.
5. Be Aware
It’s important that you’re fully aware of everything you’re in store for. For example: your mother’s house on Christmas Eve and that giant roast beef with all the fixings – you have to know what you’re getting into and be ready to eat responsibly.
This means eating properly at home, grabbing a snack before you attend any big dinners or parties, and always exercising portion control when you’re eating holiday meals. You should be taking your time to eat, giving your body time to feel full, and avoiding seconds whenever possible.
Having some dessert isn’t forbidden, but make sure you limit your intake to one cookie or one small piece of pie. And remember: you’ll have to work harder for every time you overindulge.
6. Be Charitable
A lot of the gifts you’ll receive around Christmas time are food gifts. You have a great opportunity here to enter into a win-win situation. Instead of eating the food and gaining weight, donate it to a church or the Salvation Army so someone less fortunate can enjoy it. You’ll feel great about yourself for giving the gift and avoiding temptation. And still make sure to send a gift in return. Don’t be stingy.
7. Be Diligent
