Vegan Diet for Fast Weight Loss

There is no magic pill to lose weight easy and fast but a vegan diet for fast weight loss has shown amazing results when done correctly! There are a few things however that you have to keep in mind. A vegan diet can easily become an unhealthy diet. Not sure if you want to go vegan? You can start weaning yourself off by trying a meatless Monday first or by experimenting with some vegan meals for weight loss before changing completely.

If you are ready for the next step, here are 5 tips to make your vegan diet a healthy one.

1. Stay Hydrated!

There’s no sense in worrying about your health and losing weight if you’re not drinking enough water. Like a car that needs oil to stay running smoothly, your body needs water to lubricate and move things along. It is the most basic, and simple law to follow yet so many people are dehydrated. Water is another way your body receives oxygen. Your blood needs it, your organs need it and you won’t be able to digest your food correctly if you don’t have enough water in your system. Many ailments like headaches, fatigue, depression, & constipation can easily be signs of dehydration.

2. Eat Whole Grains

You want to eat foods that are closest to their original form and have not been “enriched” or “fortified” or altered much from its original form. Eat whole grain brown rice, kamut, amaranthe, quinoa, steel cut oats, millet and other grains that haven’t been processed. It should be the only thing listed under the ingredients on the nutrition facts label. A lot of breads say whole grain but when you read the ingredients it says, “enriched” whole-wheat flour in addition to 20 other ingredients that you can’t pronounce. Manufacturers often process the flour and then “dye” it darker to make it look more like wheat but tastes light like white breads. Try sprouted breads instead like Ezekiel bread; they’re hearty but easier to digest and are fiber rich.

3. Limit Processed Vegan Products & Meat Imitators

Vegan meat substitutes should not be your staple food. The key is to eat fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts. If you want veggie burgers, look up a good recipe. Make yourself a batch using fresh vegetables and beans, then freeze the left over’s so you can have fresh veggie burgers at hand anytime you want them. Boca burgers and other veggie burgers often use fillers that hardly have any nutrients in it. Many are nothing but soy, wheat and some artificial flavors offering empty calories with little nutritional value. Plus, soy isn’t the healthiest food to consume on a daily basis. Vegan foods like French fries, Oreos, and Kool-aid aren’t any healthier just because they’re vegan. Brands like Joe’s Oats patties, or Sunshine original burgers are some of the healthier choices if you need something more convenient, they use fresher and recognizable ingredients.

4. Limit Sugar Consumption

If you want to lose weight, you have to get used to cooking your own whole foods. Substitute table sugar and raw sugar for natural sugars like apples, raisins, dates, agave nectar or natural maple syrup to sweeten your foods. Natural sweeteners don’t spike your insulin the way other sugars do making it easier to lose weight. Stay away from artificial sugars like:

  • Aspartame (NutraSweet & Equal)
  • Saccharin (Sweet’n’Low)
  • Sucralose (Splenda)
  • Acesulfame k (used in pharmaceuticals, beverages, and foods around the world)
  • Neotame (diet soft drinks, and low calorie foods) are unsafe in large amounts.

Artificial sugars are just as bad if not worse than table sugar. Aspartame contains phenylalanine (50%), aspartic acid (40%) and methanol (10%), three well-recognized neurotoxins.

5. Increase Fresh Produce Consumption

Eat more fresh vegetables and fruit. You can never eat too much as long as you’re eating a variety of them. All fruits and vegetables are packed with phyto-nutrients, and ant-oxidants that fight off disease, boost metabolism, and have little to no fat. Try to revolve your meals around colors of the rainbow. For example, if you haven’t eaten anything blue, make sure you add it in instead of eating nothing but greens. You can also add a vegan protein powder like Vega or Sun Warrior and make smoothies for weight loss.

6. Bonus Tip: Eat Often!

With a vegan diet, you need to eat more to get enough calories to fuel your body. Your body needs the fuel! You will start to lose weight in no time and you will lose weight with out starvation, or neglect. There are major risks involved with extreme weight loss or starvation. Food is supposed to nurture you and fuel your body with energy. Enjoy and take time out of your day to reflect and really appreciate the nutrition you receive from the earth; that in turn makes you healthy and happy.
