It can get really confusing for those new to a vegan life style. First thing you should ask yourself is how strict are you trying to be and why do you want to become a vegan in the first place? Being vegan can get pretty serious. Some vegans don’t consume or wear anything that was derived from an animal. There’s also vegans that just eat a plant-based diet and ignore the fact that they wear things like leather, and furs. Being 100% vegan is no easy task but if you are only trying to adopt a healthy lifestyle, a vegan plant based diet can be one of the healthiest diets you will ever adopt in your life.
- Vegans eat plant-based foods; this includes:
Vegans do not eat anything derived from an animal and they don’t eat any animal by products like dairy, eggs, meat, poultry, or fish. To many this may seem like an impossible task. Contrary to what many believe about not consuming animal by-products, vegans are generally healthier than the average meat eater. They often have a low body fat percentage, and if they were over weight, a vegan diet most likely helped them to achieve weight loss. They consume an amazing amount of anti-oxidants, vitamins, nutrients, and they get enough protein & calcium from plant-based sources.
Plants contain vitamins and nutrients that are easily absorbed by the body unlike many synthetic vitamins created in the lab. The body is made to absorb vitamins from it’s food. America is eating a high fat, high protein diet with very little anti-oxidants, and very little phyto-nutrients that can only come from plant based diet. No wonder there’s a rise in the number of people diagnosed with cancers and other diseases that could be prevented by eating nourishing foods and adopting an active life style. As mentioned in the Huffington post, “A 2012 analysis of all the best studies done to date concluded vegetarians have significantly lower cancer rates”.
Studies have also shown, however, that vegans that eat a diet high in processed foods, and foods mostly made with GMO soy; their cancer rates have doubled. It is possible to eat very unhealthy if you are a vegan so the key is to eat a plant based diet and not one that mainly consists of processed foods. Plants are medicinal in nature, and are packed with vital nutrients that every human being needs in their diet. A plant-based vegan diet is a great way to include more fruits and vegetables in your diet. Eating more fruits and vegetables is a sure way to lower the risk of disease associated with a poor diet.
Vegans often consume enough protein because most of their meals have seeds, nuts, and legumes which are high in protein. They plant based sources of protein throughout their day making it easier for their body to absorb. They also receive their calcium from rich plant based sources like broccoli and other dark green leafy greens. Seaweeds, and algae have a high source of iron, and other nutrients that fight against cancers, and blood deficiencies.
Eating vegan is very healthy as long as it includes a diet filled with a variety of plant-based foods. If you’re new to the vegan lifestyle, start by including more vegetables and fruit in your diet and limit consumption of animal derived foods. Once you get the hang of that, then you can figure out if you want to take it as far as not wearing anything that comes from an animal. The most important thing is your health. Become Vegan to become healthier and everything else will fall in place. Eat more vegetables, and fruits and feel better almost immediately.
