For years, I heard people talking about “balancing out their pH” or “getting an alkaline body”. I never understood what they were saying, as all I knew about pH balances was that it was necessary for a clean pool. My research led me to uncover some pretty interesting facts about the body’s pH balance, and I now understand why it’s important to have an alkaline pH balance!
What is an Alkaline pH?
To understand what an alkaline pH is, you need to understand the concept of pH balance.
There are two extremes for the pH balance: alkaline and acidic. Anything with a pH of 0 is completely acidic, and anything with a pH of 14 is completely alkaline. The human body should have a pH between 7.3 and 7.4, which means that it is slightly more alkaline than acidic.
Why Do You Want This?
Acidity is great for lemons and hydrochloric acid, but the human body needs to be slightly more alkaline than acidic. The reason for this is that too much acid in your body can be harmful. An acidic body is more prone to disease, infection, and even health disorders like cancer. With an acidic pH, your body will usually struggle to get back to an alkaline pH. This means that it will have to draw alkalizing agents from your bones, which can cause deficiencies. When your body has balanced itself and is properly alkaline once again, you are more easily able to resist damage done to your body.
How to Restore an Alkaline pH
If you’re trying to balance out your pH levels, you’ll find that the only way to get back on track is by having a proper diet. Exercise, sleep, and relaxation will do nothing in this case, but it’s all dependent on the food you eat.
What foods should you be eating? Pretty much every raw food on the planet is alkalizing, even highly acidic foods like tomatoes and lemons. You’ll find that the high-fiber greens and fruits are the best ones to restore an alkaline balance to your body, so it’s in your best interest to eat as much of these raw foods as possible. The good news is that you’re not limited in your consumption of raw foods, so they can comprise up to 80% of your diet if you are trying to restore a healthy alkaline balance.
What foods should you avoid? Processed meat not only makes your body highly acidic, but it’s also horrible for your health. Dairy products tend to be highly acidic, and anything with refined sugar in it should also be avoided. Red meat is also fairly acidic, so you’ll need to cut back on your consumption of beef and pork until you’ve balanced out your pH levels. Finally, coffee and tea need to be taken off the menu as well, as they are highly acidic.
How Long Will It Take?
The truth is that it will take anywhere from 10 to 30 days for your body’s pH levels to be properly balanced once again. It depends on just how acidic your pH levels are, as well as how faithfully you stick to your alkalizing diet. The more raw foods you eat, the quicker you will restore a healthy balance in your body.
It’s tough to eat only raw foods, so you can look into whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes to add to your diet as well. A lot of these foods will promote an alkaline balance, and they will give you the nutrients you need now that you’re cutting meat, cheese, and processed foods from your diet.
