Why Being an 18th Century Gentleman Can Help you Lose Weight

Did you know that living life like a gentleman in the 18th century can be a great way to lose weight? Sure, life wasn’t ideal back then, but there are many great things about life in the 1700s that makes it the perfect way to lose weight. Here is how:

Drinking Tea

If there was one thing that you’d expect from a gentleman in the 1700s, it’s that he’d spend a lot of time drinking tea. Much of the tea they drank was black tea, and black tea is loaded with flavonoids and antioxidants that will promote weight loss.

Hint: If you’re not a fan of black tea, go for green tea. It’s less posh and uppity, but it’s great for weight loss!


A form of tennis was invented in the 18th century, and sports like bowling, polo, horse racing, and cricket became very popular. Most gentlemen spent hours each week playing these sports, and it was a great way to show off to the ladies. Being a sportsman today is still a great way to show your prowess, and it’s a great way to get in shape. You’ll find that sports are still as fun today as they were back then, and you can actually enjoy your efforts to lose weight when you play sports.

Being Well-Mannered

If there was one thing that every gentleman in the 1700s had to have, it was good manners. If you’ve every tried to follow the etiquette customs of that day, you know how much work it can be. You have to stand when the ladies stand, sit up perfectly straight, eat in small bites, nibble at your food, and make polite conversation the whole time. It’s a great way to lose weight, as you’ll burn a lot of calories standing up and sitting down a dozen times during the meal. You’ll be able to only eat a few small bites, and improving your posture will do wonders for your belly fat!

Getting Around

One of the best things about life in the 18th century was that you had to walk or ride everywhere you went. You could ride a horse – which is, in itself, very exhausting – or you could take a carriage ride. With the poor road conditions, you would basically spend the entire ride trying to hold yourself in place – giving your core muscles a great workout. If you weren’t in the mood to be tossed around in a carriage or have your rear rubbed sore by a horse, you would walk to your destinations. You’ll definitely lose weight if you have to get around in these ways.


The seaside was the destination of choice for those on vacation, especially the rich and affluent gentlemen of the 18th century. Swimming wasn’t the most common activity while at the beach, but many men would spend time rowing and crewing boats. If there was a lady to entertain, a boat ride would be a great way to get her alone. It’s also great exercise, and a seaside vacation filled with swimming and boating is great for your weight loss!

Fighting Off Highwaymen

Highwaymen were plentiful in the 1700s, with folk legends like Dick Turpin robbing those traveling the roads. If you wanted to avoid being robbed, you’d have to fight off the highwaymen using swords, clubs, pistols, or whatever you could get your hands on. Not only would you have to practice your fencing daily just to be good enough to defeat your opponents, but you’d fight regularly just to keep your valuable safe. What better way could there be to get in shape?

Hint: Fencing is a great way to get in shape, but martial arts and boxing are also great contemporary options to learn to fight and lose weight!
